Meet Harlie Barickman

Harlie Taylor Barickman grew up in Rye, Colorado. As a little girl, she loved everything outdoors -- from digging in the dirt, to holding earthworms and ladybugs. Her dad even nicknamed her "Bug."

She had a passion for gardening

The windowsill in Harlie's bedroom was her own miniature greenhouse: full of cups with planted seeds for pumpkins, watermelon, vegetables and herbs.

Why a greenhouse?

Harlie's Greenhouse is a tribute to Harlie Barickman. It will give students at Rye Elementary School hands-on experience with growing plants, flowers, fruit and vegetables -- all while learning about the beauty of life.

We appreciate your generosity

Thanks for helping Harlie's family and friends make the greenhouse a reality!

We have completed phase one of Harlie's Greenhouse by raising $75,000.  Phase one included building a 800 square foot climate-controlled, ADA-accessible greenhouse. The greenhouse can accomodate up to 25 students and teachers, includes 5 indoor raised garden beds, two large work benches, and a 150 square foot permanent brick planter box.  Outside the greenhouse is an additional seven raised garden beds.  All garden containers have a built in drip system for year round watering.

Phase two of Harlie's Greenhouse was completed in the summer of 2015.  Phase two included a six foot fence surrounding the greenhouse and an additional one acre of gardening space.  Thanks to our many sponsors, we were able to add 16 raised garden beds, 9 rock flower beds, seven fruit trees, a cement sidewalk, and a paver stone walkway leading into the greenhouse, an 800 square foot shed, seven Tower Gardens, and a permanent pumpkin patch. All gardens have individual drip systems for summer watering.  An additional $50,000 was raised for Harlie's Greenhouse and Garden Space.  Thank you to all our sponsors who gave generously for the annual Hoofit4Harlie run held each September in Rye, Colorado.

We are currently fundraising for Phase three of Harlie's Greenhouse and Garden Space.  Phase three will include  an outdoor water feature, and an outdoor gazebo which will allow classes to utilize the outdoor space during the entire school year.  We would love to add additional raised garden beds with drip systems next summer.  This past summer we grew carrots, onions, peppers, okra, tomatoes, and so much more!  Local groups and organizations have requested use of the garden space and we simply need more raised beds! Help sponsor the 7th Hoofit4Harlie run on September 19, 2020. Please check out our website and see for yourself "where kids learn to grow".

We look forward to creating a wonderful tribute to celebrate the life of the girl we love so much -- and we thank you for being a part of it.
