Hey there this is Jessica. :)
I have known for 15 years now that one day I would need a transplant. I have never really thought about the details, or focused on it much at all. For the most part I have tried to just live my life and not dwell on my disease.
About a year ago I moved into stage 5 kidney failure. Yep, that's the last stage. Being the person I am I have stayed pretty positive and decided to put off dialysis until it was 100% medically necessary. Really my goal was to make it to transplant without ever having to do it. Check that goal off my list.
Finding a donor is a really weird thing to have to think about. It's something that I have dreaded and never knew quite who, or how to ask. Luckily, I never really had to.
I had two people that offered to be tested to be my donor, my cousin, and Julia. Going into the testing I never in my wildest dreams would think that the very first person I tested would be a match, and a pretty good match at that.
After the initial shock wore off and tons of tests, here we are. Only two weeks away from surgery, a little scared, and I think just ready to get the show on the road.
Julia has been amazing through all of this. First off she is giving me an organ...WOW... willing to go through the pain and recovery process, and she is taking time off work. I wish that there was anything that I could do to show how much this means to me but I really am at a loss.
So the next best thing would be to try to make her as comfortable as possible. Her recovery housing is a bit cramped and I was hoping to raise enough funds to cover a furnished apartment or house in the Portland area for one to two weeks, as well as any other unforeseen cost.
