The organizers of this fundraiser are in the Sam Houston State University Sports Management Masters Program. Kristy Pugliese was a student in this program in 2019. She was once in our shoes. During the program Kristy interned for the Saints and Pelicans organization in New Orleans, LA and eventually moved up to a full-time job in 2020. This past January she found a mass below her ear and had it removed. This surgery left part of her face paralyzed and she is only just now regaining full movement. In April, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Salivary Gland Cancer (Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma), after tumors were found in her lymph nodes. She has over 50 pea sized lymph nodes removed from her neck in a second surgery. June 6th, Kristy started radiation therapy. The week before she was enjoying the many tastes of life; the first cup of coffee in the morning, her favorite food in New Orleans, ice cream, because she was about to lose all taste with radiation, and it would be years before she ever got it back. The thing that surprised me about her was how positive she was when we spoke with her, despite her situation. It was a fluke she got this cancer. Kristy wasn't a smoker, which are usually the people who get this cancer. She found the tumor out of sheer coincidence. There were no other markers indicating she had cancer, except her mass, which she had removed right away. Kristy may have gotten lucky finding the tumor, having it removed, and now radiation, she needs help with all the costs. Bearkats take care of our own. Women help women. Whatever the reason, Kristy needs people to fight for her. Donate and help her fight the battle against cancer.
