Update #6

As of last Thursday, it has been four weeks since Kahlen had her liver transplant in St. Louis. She remains in Peds ICU at the children's hospital there. While, her new liver looks great and is functioning how it should; she has had major difficulties with her lungs and other set backs due to a bleed in her stomach and her lungs. This has been a hard road for Kahlen as well as her family. Please continue to pray for her recovery. We appreciate all of you so much and your kind and generous donations. Cards of encouragement can be sent to Kahlen at: 418 E. Adams Ave. Kirwood, MO 63122

More Info

Kahlen Salis is a 13-year-old girl from Freeman, SD. She is the daughter of Walter & Heather (Goens) Salis and Kris (Henrichs) Salis. She has one brother, Ricky age 14.

When Kahlen was 3, she was diagnosed with Dyskeratosis Congenita (a rare genetic disorder). At the age of 4, she had a bone marrow transplant. Following which she was able to enjoy several years of good health until 2020, when it was discovered she would need to have a liver transplant. She also requires 3 litters of oxygen 24/7 to keep her 02 stats above 91%.

Kahlen, once a very busy young girl; misses playing softball, basketball, and volleyball. She was also previously active in archery and swimming. She continues to support her classmates by attending their games and also her brother's basketball games. She loves spending time with her friends and cousins, baking with her grandma, doing tie-dye projects, and snuggling with her dogs; Sasha and Liala. She wants it noted she also misses helping take care of the family's chickens.

Kahlen's mom, Kris serves the community as a Health Care Coordinator at the local rural medical hospital. Kahlen's dad, Walter has been on medical disability for two years due to a torn rotator cuff and has been able to provide care and assistance to Kahlen when she needed to do on-line schooling last year.  He additionally contributes as an archery coach through 4-H. Her bonus-parent, Heather is an MSW and mental health therapist at a local non-profit agency. Kahlen's brother Ricky is involved in confirmation classes, basketball and Kempo Karate.

Because of Kahlen's special medical needs, her transplant will be done at the Children's Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. This requires the family to travel there every couple of months for check-ups. Additionally, once the transplant takes place, the family will be there for up to 6 weeks.

Currently, the transplant team would like the family to consider relocating temporarily to St. Louis until the transplant occurs so they can monitor Kahlen more closely as she has experienced increased health complications due to her illness.

There has been an increase in financial hardship on the family with the cost of housing, food, gas, and loss of wages. A financial donation in any amount would be used to assist the family with these costs.

Donations can be made through this page or directly to the family at: 27950 442nd Ave Freeman, SD 57029

Please make checks out to Walter Salis so the funds can be deposited into the appropriate account.

If you are unable to make a financial contribution at this time, other ways to contribute include: prayers; cards of encouragement to both Kahlen and Ricky; and assistance with meals for Heather and Ricky when Walter, Kris, and Kahlen are gone. Share this post with others to help spread the word and gather donations.

On behalf of the Salis Family, We Thank You.

Update #6

Walter, Kris, and Kahlen have temporarily relocated to St. Louis, MI as of 4/28/22. Ricky and Heather remain in Freeman but will go for a short visit soon. Kahlen had an appointment with her doctors on Friday. Everything looks good, although her O2 states are still low. They want to see her back again in two weeks unless they see her sooner if they get a call for a transplant. She has been put on the expedited list now that they are closer. Hopefully things will move quickly. Thank you for your continued support and prayers. We are at just under 50% of our fundraising goal. Any additional support would be appreciated to pay for housing and food while the family is in St Louis.

Update #4

Guess who's returning to in person school Monday? That's right, it's Kahlen! She is currently able to use her portable O2 machine again and can go back to in person school as she awaits her transplant. She will be using a wheelchair to make it easier to go between classes.

The family continues to wait to learn about affordable housing information so they can make a decision about where to stay in St. Louis. They are hoping to have a place to go by April
