Justice: Trump, Biden & COVID-19

I believe we all have an obligation to raise our voice against injustice. There is no greater injustice than the falsely accused. As a researcher, I seek to dig out the facts-then the truth is revealed. Support justice!

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere!                                    – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.    This statement is as true today as when Dr. King made it over 40 years ago. It expresses a concept taken very seriously here at Does Justice Matter – fighting such injustices whenever and where-ever they are found is of the utmost importance. And there is no greater injustice than when someone is falsely accused of a crime.  This is true of any crime, but it becomes even more troubling when the crime is one of a heinous nature. In such a situation, it is important to set the record straight – to absolve the accused and, hopefully, hold the guilty party responsible for their actions. It is what justice demands. That does not appear to have occurred in the case outlined herein though. While DJM normally tries to avoid commenting on political issues, concepts of equality and fairness require an exception here in the pursuit of justice.     To put it mildly, 2020 has been a unique year. A pandemic of unprecedented proportion has wreaked havoc on the entire world, the United States included. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website, as of November 12, 2020, a total of 10,457,662 cases of COVID-19 infection have been reported resulting in 242,548 deaths in the United States. And the numbers continue to climb on a daily basis. Over the course of this year’s presidential election a large number of people expressed the view that President Trump was responsible for these infections and these deaths. DJM became aware of this accusation when a respected and admired communication professor at a local college shared an article on the number of deaths with the caption that President Trump should be charged with “crimes against his citizens.” Others echoed this and similar sentiments as the election contest entered its final days. Even since the election was called for Biden, people continue to blame Trump for the virus. When asked to provide details though, not the professor nor any others could explain what President Trump had done to make him culpable in these deaths, or even, what he (or President-elect Biden) could have done to prevent this virus from spreading. (Anyone who wishes to answer this question now may do so by emailing DJM at doesjusticematter@gmail.com or liking/commenting on the Justice Matters Facebook page). In fact, simple research discovered that President Trump had taken a number of steps to control or restrict the spread of this virus even before its danger was known. Not one of his critics have offered any suggestion of what Biden would have done to reach better or different results (again, anyone wishing to offer their insight is free to do so)? So, people are falsely accusing President Trump of mass murder without probable cause or evidence. That is an injustice which cannot and should not be left unchallenged. Regardless of political leanings, the President of the United States should not be falsely accused of mass murder. Especially by his own citizenry.    If not President Trump, then who should be held accountable? Or is there anyone responsible for this pandemic? Here’s a summary of what is known to the general public.  Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome – Coronavirus – 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the official name for Corona Virus Disease – 2019 (aka, Covid-19) ( WHO, March 2020). Coronavirus’ are not new, rather they have been around for centuries according to some scientists (Weirtham, et.al., 2013). SARS-CoV-2 is simply the novel coronavirus which surfaced in 2019. Most experts agree that Covid-19 can be traced back to bats living in the caves near Wuhan, China. (WHO, 2020). Originally, Chinese officials asserted that Covid-19 was first transmitted to humans in the open air market there in Wuhan, but that it disappeared after the market was shut down. (WHO, 2020). However, evidence has since surfaced to dispute this scenario. (Ingam).      This area is also home to the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), China’s only level 4 bio-laboratory. (WHO, 2020). One of the projects undertaken at WIV is the study of coronaviruses found in samples collected from the bats found in caves outside of Wuhan (Ingam).  The Chinese have acknowledged that their lab contains a variety of novel coronaviruses from those bats, including one which is said to be over 96% identical to the Covid-19 virus (WHO, 2020). WIV received funding for this project through the United State’s PREDICT Program, a program run by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)(Predict flyer, 2013). The Obama administration official responsible for supervising and overseeing USAID’s program was then Vice President Joseph Biden. In 2018, WIV was inspected by US officials as part of the information gathering process in advance of the USAID’s consideration of whether to renew the program’s funding, set to expire in 2019. Numerous safety and/or security violations were found during that inspection, many of which have never been confirmed as being corrected. In October, 2019, the Predict Program was not refunded by the Trump Administration.  This prompted Biden, who was by then a Presidential candidate, to issue a statement condemning the Trump administration for rolling “back progress President Obama and I made to strengthen global health security.”  (Biden, 2019). According to candidate Biden, not funding the Predict Program left us vulnerable to a pandemic.     In December, 2019, Chinese officials discovered what they described as unusual cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, China.  These patients were determined to be infected with SARS-CoV-2, a novel coronavirus which has come to be known as Covid-19. In mid-January, a patient in Washington state who recently returned from the Wuhan area was determined to be infected with SARS-CoV-2. Dubbed WA1 (meaning Washington, patient 1), he was believed to be the first United States case of Covid-19. In the months which followed, the virus has spread throughout the United States leading to the numbers listed above, which are climbing every day. President Trump was repeatedly blamed for these infections and deaths, although some researchers state that the actions taken in response to WA1’s infection were appropriate. Biden used this blame throughout the campaign to undermine President Trump’s approach to the pandemic and ultimately to claim he was incompetent to be president.  He then promised to restore full funding to the Predict program if elected (Ingam). A number of analysts say the handling of the pandemic was President Trump’s biggest negative during the campaign and may have been what ultimately cost him the presidency.    This is where the narrative takes a darker twist. On November 7, 2020, Joseph Biden was declared the winner of presidential election. Absent any conclusive evidence of voter fraud or illegally cast ballots (which is seldom available), he will be sworn in on January 20, 2020, to become the 46th President of the United States. Did the United States just elect a mass murder the likes of which the world has not seen since Hitler was elected in the German elections of 1932? Or did the Chinese simply decide to influence our election by creating a global crisis which could be used to undermine the presidency of the one who had pulled their funding for the WIV lab? Similar to how Russians were accused of influencing the 2016 elections? Or was it simply the negligence of lab officials which allowed a deadly virus to escape? Strong circumstantial cases could be made for any of these theories depending on the inferences one wishes to draw from the facts. A point of interest though is found in the numbers – according to PBS, the United States has slightly over 331 million people, while China (the world’s largest population) has just over 1.4 billion people. Yet, while we have over 10 million infected and 242,000+ dead, China has only 84,000+ infected and less than 5000 dead from Covid-19. DJM will continue to seek out information on this issue and update the research as it comes in. Please support this effort and the ongoing research on all justice issues with your donation. Together we can expose injustice so it can hopefully be corrected.
