More Info

Since I was a very young child my dream has been to be a singer-songwriter. I wrote my first song when I was four, and have continued on, singing and writing whenever I can. I participated in as many music and theater programs in school as schedules would allow, and obtained a BA in music from Cal State University, Fullerton. Over the years I have sung in many productions, choirs, studio gigs, and as a cantor at Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood, CA since 1982.

I have sung backup for Melissa Manchester, Josh Groban, Sarah Vaughan, Pete Townsend, Billy Idol, Alfie Boe, jazz harpist Carol Robbins, Christoph Bull, and many others. I have released two solo albums available on sites like Amazon, iTunes, Spotify, Google Play Music, YouTube, and many other locations, as well as at my website.

Recently, Grammy Award Winner Melissa Manchester held a cover contest and the prize was to sing a duet with her live on-stage. My husband, Paco Silva, who loved photography, said "I'll make a video for you!" He did and it ended up as one of the winners. I got to sing my duet with my lifelong muse at The Rose in Pasadena, CA in April of 2018. The video also planted a seed for Paco who began feverishly learning video production. He has gone on to make videos for many individuals and organizations, including several for Ms. Manchester, herself, and now makes all my videos. It's a creative, spiritual, and all-around match made in heaven! So when you support my music, you are also supporting the video career of Paco as well.

There are so many costs involved with making music. To be honest, up to this point I do not make near what I spend, but the joy of creating music is unbeatable. My Christmas album project, From Here to Nativity, received a lot of funding from friends and fans and I could not have done it without you. As I move forward, I will probably release a series of singles digitally. The first of those is another Christmas tune, Finlandia Brasileira. I wrote a Christmas lyric to the beloved tune Finlandia by Jean Sibelius and producer Stephan Oberhoff graciously agreed to lend his artistry and expertise in Brazilian music to give the song a very unique flavor, especially for a Christmas song. You can be a part of it by contributing any amount and, of course, receive downloads of music. If you were a contributor to my past campaign, I will be sending you an mp3 of the song when it is done as a thank you.

Please

THANK YOU!

Update #31

Greetings!

I hope you are enjoying the album. It's getting airplay on dozens of stations around the world and I'm getting a lot of orders for 5, 10, or even 20 CDs for people to give as gifts. Thanks!

If you are in the area, I hope you will join us on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 4:00 pm at Stats in Pasadena at 120 S. Raymond Ave. It's the iconic Christmas store where we filmed the "People Look East" video. I''ll sing some of the songs from the album with special guests, grammy-nomiated harpist Carol Robbins, Singer-composer Lynn Kowal, and Guitarist Chad Ellis. After the mini-concert I'll be signing CDs. You can also explore the incredible store!

We've been gettin gsome press, too!

I got a call on Saturday morning that my hometown newspaper, the Porterville Recorder, had put a story about the project on the front page.

The Credit Union publication CU Today featured this story:
http://www.cutoday.info/Fresh-Today/Credit-Union-Employee-Releases-Holiday-Album

Pasadena Now had this feature:
http://www.pasadenanow.com/main/iconic-stats-debuts-eclectic-christmas-album-at-special-cd-singing-with-artist/

I could still use some more reviews on iTunes and Amazon.

Thanks for everything, and enjoy the holidays!

Update #28

Stats Floral Supply in Pasadena has been affectionately called "The Disneyland of Christmas Stores", and for good reason. It's like walking into a winter wonderland in the middle of Southern California. So, when I recorded a Christmas album I thought right away about filming a video in the beautiful marketplace. Last year they announced that they would not be returning, but, miraculously, they are giving it one more go to see if this year they can make it work. Coincidentally, one of my newest co-workers shared with me that she had worked at Stats previously and knew the owners well. So, of course, I exploited that connection and asked for an introduction. Happily, the owner, Damon Stathatos, generously agreed to allow us to shoot a video in his beautiful store and you can see the result here: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WqG5Vammou0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> I will be giving a mini concert and will sign CDs at the store located at 120 S. Raymond Ave, Pasadena, CA 91105 on Saturday, December 10. Watch for more details and the exact time soon.

"People Look East" is my favorite Advent carol. It is such a joyous, uplifting melody and the poem is exquisite. As I mention in the lyric booklet of "From Here to Nativity", people in my church choir always call it "Johnny's song" when we sing it in church.

I hope you all have your CDs now. If not, please let me know ASAP. Also, if anything was damaged in transit I will send you a replacement. I hope you like the album and, if so, will take a few moments to post reviews on places like Amazon, Google Plus Music, iTunes, etc. Comments under videos on YouTube help a LOT, especially the first 24 hours, as do "Likes" and embeds. Of course, hsaring is a great thing, too. Don't forget, the album makes a great Christmas gift!

Thanks for helping me do all this! I am having the time of my life.

Hugs,

Johnny Schaefer

Update #23

I took risks.
I stretched.
I cried.
I laughed heartily.
I thought outside the box.
I played.
I worked with phenomenal musicians, producers, artists, and supporters.
I collaborated with great lyricists.
I wrote lyrics for great melodists.
I dreamed of beloved Christmases in record Los Angeles summer heat.
I recorded in a basement, in a church, and on a state-of the-art soundstage at the Cinema School at a major university.
I focused on a beautiful journey as the world around me spun out of control.
I put myself in the shoes of those I sang and wrote about.
I explored different ways of singing old songs.
I felt the rapturous joy of new songs being born through me.
I took out a 401K loan..
I put my self out there in the hope that some of you would pitch in to help me finance such a huge project not knowing if anyone would, and, as of this writing, 68 of you have done just that with thousands of your hard-earned dollars.

THANK YOU for your love and your trust.

This journey "From Here to Nativity" has been one of the happiest, most wondrous experiences of my life. Thank you for taking it with me.
There are just a few days left in the fundraising campaign. Mastering has begun, and then we will send the music and the graphics to the factory to be made into something you can see and touch, as well as hear.
Now the effort to share it with the world begins in earnest. The videos, the messaging, the mailings, the door-knocking. I believe in this project and put it in God's hands.

At the beginning I said "Let's make something beautiful together."
We certainly have.

I can''t wait to share the finished project with you.

WIth Much Love and Gratitude,
Johnny

Update #21

Happy Friday! I started the order process with the CD manufacturers last night. We are finishing up checking graphics and proofreading all the copy. The album will include a beautiful lyric booklet featuring more drawings by Deborah Blount. Mastering has begun on the recordings. (There is still one song we are tightening up this weekend.) I am really excited and cannot wait to share it with you. I think you will feel very good about being a part of this project, and it will be a collection of holiday songs you will enjoy for years to come. Thank you!

When it's time to move on, the things we shared with a person can bring up powerful emotions. Update #19

Christmas isn't just one emotion, mood or experience. It's a wonderful combination of moments as varied as the lights and ornaments on most Christmas trees. I aim to capture that on my album, "From Here to Nativity." You'll hear reverent songs, joyful songs, reflective songs and even a rollicking 50's-style novelty song about a kid's adventure with Santa. I wrote "Oh Golly, Lookie!" as a fun tribute to holiday tunes like "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer." I enlisted the help of some terrific singer/actresses to tell a fun story that will bring holiday cheer, Enjoy this cheery video preview of "Oh Golly, Lookie!" Thanks for making this all possible! https://youtu.be/806a70VIqyY

Update #17

Hello,.

On Saturday I parked under a Crepe Myrtle tree for a little shade at Stephan Oberhoff's place to finish "Joseph's Prayer.". This held significance for me because Crepe Myrtles were my dad's favorite trees. He planted three in front of our house when I was a kid and they are still there today. We have one in front of our house on Mt. Washington so I think of him often as I pull up. Adding to the poignancy is the fact that "Joseph's Prayer" is about fatherhood in several ways, including the fatherly aspect of God's relationship with us. So I love that I parked under a crepe myrtle for the sessions. Perfect.

This week I am working with several of the engineers and producers I recorded with to mix. We are almost ready for mastering-probably next week. More video and audio previews are coming soon. Thanks again for your help with this project. It means a lot to me.

Update #16

My apologies. This is a repost of the update from last night. After working all day and recording for four hours last night I messed up on Stephan's website address. This contains the actual site. Forgive the additional message. Please do check out his site.

Here's a peek into the magical recording studio of Producer Stephan Oberhoff during the recording of my new song "Joseph's Prayer." I think it's the best song I've ever written and I took it to Stephan because of his superb musicianship as I have observed it as he served as Melissa Manchester's Music Director for a decade, including producing her "When I Look Down That Road" album. Stephan immediately "got" the song and collaborating with him as we brought it from my head to the air was a wondrous experience. He has an album of his own coming out in the next month or so. Watch for it. And check out his work at www.stephanoberhoff.com Here's the new video clip from our adventure together: https://youtu.be/u8kFQs7gIvw

Update #14

Hello,

I hope you all had a great weekend! My Saturday was one of the loveliest times I have had, I had the privilege of working with Stephan Oberhoff, who was Melissa Manchester's Music Director for ten years and is currently co-producing an album with Quincy Jones, on my song "Joseph's Prayer." Paco is putting together a video we shot during the process. I can't wait until you hear the song! I think the love we put into it shines through. In a message to me he said "I very much look forward to putting the finishing touches on the song and take it to where the creator wants it to be." Perfect. My experience is that the song came through me. Thank you for enabling me to work with the best around to give birth to it.

The album is almost done. You will see that I have extended the campaign through September 30. There is a very good reason for this, which I will announce in the next couple of days. A very big opportunity has presented itself which will help the album reach a lot more people. Stay tuned.

Thank you again for all your love and support!

Update #13

Hi everyone!

I hope your Labor Day weekend was great. Mine was a labor of love on our project. I recorded all three days and it was a fantastic experience. Here is a video we put together with a sneak preview of Christoph Bull's "The Proclamation of the Birth of Christ". I was privileged to be the first to record his spectacular composition accompanying the famous chant in The First Congregational Church of Los Angeles on their magnificent organ. Enjoy! And, as always, thank you for making this all happen. https://youtu.be/zN7RhsA9FKE
