“Being misgendered is crippling to self confidence”.
My name is Brandon Israel Akim Smith and I am full time student at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I am Media Studies and African American Studies double major with a double minor in Consumer Apparel Retail Studies and Entrepreneurship. I am very humbled and excited to begin raising money for top surgery.
For a while I struggled with coming out completely as a Transgender man because I was afraid of what friends and family would think of me. But, a wise person once said “what you think of yourself is more important than what other people think of you”.
With that being known, coming out and starting to transition has been the best thing I have ever done in my life. My life has more purpose, more value and I have been happier then I have ever been. I also am more involved on campus and I genuinely a lot more passionate about life.
I am 6 months on Testosterone (started October 4th) and I want to continue transitioning. I want to take my process further by getting Top Surgery completed so I can be fully recognized as a male and feel more comfortable in my skin. (I can’t be fully recognized as a male legally yet because in the state of North Carolina you are not able to change your gender marker from Female to Male without Surgery.)
This is were you come in. Your support would mean the world to me in this process because I can’t afford to pay for Surgery alone, even though I intended too. Top Surgery cost roughly around 6,750 and my insurance will not cover the cost of it, since it is not seen as a medical necessity to them. It is a necessity to me though because my paperwork for jobs , school and license say female and even though I know who I am , I would like others to know who I am as well.
6,750 seems like a lot but with the help of everyone, I know that the best present I will be receiving around Christmas is this Surgery.
Any amount that you can give, even if it is only one dollar , means a lot and makes a difference. The gift that you decide to give doesn’t have to be big to leave an impact on my life.
