My name is Shivonne Odom, LCPC, LPC, NCC. I am a proud Howard University alumna and a perinatal mental health therapist based in the Metro Washington, DC region that is passionate about perinatal mental health awareness for under served communities. I created my private practice Akoma Counseling Concepts, LLC www.akomacounselingconcepts.com and became the only Black owned private practice specializing in maternal mental health in Washington, DC. Maternal mental health focuses on postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, miscarriage, fertility issues, postpartum loss, birth trauma, etc. I soon learned that the needs of the families I serve go beyond the therapy office and created the 501(c)(3) The Olivia & Imani Wellness Project. The purpose of both organizations is to provide access to mental health care via support groups, depression screenings, technology, and continuing education in perinatal mental health.
The goal of the Olivia & Imani Wellness Project is to provide the following services to women of color suffering from miscarriage, fertility issues, birth trauma, and/or postpartum depression:
1. Free individual therapy
2. Free group therapy
3 Provide free educational and maternal health care supplies
4, Provide continuing education.
In September, 2019 I will be partnering with St. Croix Senator Alicia Barnes and the St. Croix chapter of the National Alliance On Mental Illness (NAMI) to provide pro bono maternal mental health continuing education, depression screenings, and resources to the residents of St. Croix U.S. Virgin Islands. Funds acquired by this crowdfunding site will be uses to help provide continuing education, free depression screenings, free support groups, and free maternal mental health therapy in St. Croix, Maryland, and Washington, DC.
1 in 7 women in U.S. have postpartum depression, 1 in 3 African American women have postpartum depression. African American women are also 3-4x more likely to suffer from maternal mortality and 46% of all American women experience birth trauma. Help us minimize the high rates of postpartum depression and maternal mortality by donating to this cause.
Your donation will help a woman in need of mental health services receive therapy for free!
If you do not feel comfortable making a financial donation we are accepting donations of pampers, new breastfeeding supplies, supermarket gift cards, and baby bottles to be sent to:
