More Info

The aftermath of sexual harassment and/or assault remains in the mind and bodies of victims long after the traumatic events, or series of events occur. All too often, women who report sexual misconduct in the workplace (or elsewhere) suffer silently and alone as they grapple not only with their own trauma, but with the swift backlash and harsh judgements of others. Victims exist in a system and a society that often assumes they are not being truthful. A society that prioritizes the ignorant comfort of the status quo and the financial security and reputation of the perpetrators.

We need to do better. Not only do we need to work harder to create safe places of employment, we need to draw hard lines to condemn and swiftly reprimand unacceptable behaviour, and we need to purposely support victims and survivors in the aftermath of traumatic events. This is where you come in.

At this time, we call on you to join us in a public show of support for:

The 1 in 3 members of the hospitality industry who have experienced sexual misconduct in the workplace.

The 1 in 4 womxn who will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.

The victims of the 460,000 sexual assaults that will take place in Canada this year (only 5% of which will be reported to the police).

The 12 out of 1000 victims who will see their abusers charged.

The mere 6 out of 1000 who will see their abusers convicted.

The 988 others who will never see their day in court.

We call on you to stand with Heather Bruce, Jenny Orenda Smith, Sarah Reid and 18 unnamed women who had the courage to speak out about their experiences with sexual assault and abuse in the workplace. We call on you to stand with victims and survivors and to work together for a better, safer future in this industry that we all love.

To do so, donate. Add your name (or the name of your business) to the growing list of allies that will appear in a full page spread in a Saturday edition of a national newspaper. We are aiming to raise $20,000, which will cover the cost of the ad, and with your help we can go beyond that goal to raise money for two charities. The Dandelion Initiative, a charity that is dedicated to sexual violence education and prevention, and The OCRCC, providing victim services and crisis response.

This advocacy advertisement will be similar in style to this monumental advertisement – the key message will be a show of support for sexual assault survivors and victims in the hospitality industry (and everywhere). Add your name to the list of allies.

Please find additional statistics: sexual assaultsexual harassment in the workplace, and mental and physical health of victims of sexual misconduct
