We've done so well in less than 24 hours! Goal met and exceeded! Thank you so much!

I am going to keep the momentum going on this, as Djourry's expenses will be ongoing and the family can use any and all of the support they can get!

Thank you to those who have shared and supported this campaign! It's so refreshing in such divisive times to know people can come together for the good of people in need.

My heart is full. Thank you.

More Info

The boy I am holding in the picture below is 2 years old and suffers from cerebral palsy. His parents basically don't know anything about his condition - what it really means, how it happened, what recovery or improvements are plausible. They have been doing what their doctor told them to do - taking him to "physical therapy" three times per week at a free clinic run by Cubans.

I have been trying to advocate for this boy and find him quality PT, equipment, and education for his parents. This morning at 6am, I decided to travel the 30 minutes to Gonaives to accompany his parents to a physical therapy session so I could learn more about their capacity, his diagnosis, etc.

It was nothing short of tortue.

This poor boy was held down by his parents on a table - the only piece of equipment in the room aside from one of those big exercise balls.

The "therapist" began "stimulating his muscle response" by whacking the boy on the feet. Then on his palms. He did some basic movement - exercises you or I or his parents (or anyone, for that matter) could do with him - at home, with compassion and without being traumatized...

A few minutes of this and I felt uneasy and super skeptical. Then, the "therapist" flipped the boy upside down, held him by his ankles and literally swung him from side to side, front to back.

He then placed the boy on the almost deflated exercise ball, rolled him to and fro a few times, until he let go and the boy fell on the ground and hit his head.

This is when I stepped in.  I picked him up, told them we were done, and walked out the door with him. I almost forgot his parents were even there.

I couldn't (and still cannot) believe what this boy must be going through emotionally and mentally every time he gets brought to this place. Of course he can't verbalize it aside from the screaming and doing all he can to resist physically.

Of course his parents don't realize that he's fully there cognitively and knows what is happening to him. Can you imagine what must be going through his mind?

I made the parents promise me they would never bring him bak there. And I promised them I'd find them a REAL physical therapist and REAL physical therapy.

Thanks to good friends, I've secured an assessment for Djourry in a town about 5 hours south of where we live. They will travel in two weeks for this appointment and be referred to a reputable therapy center closer to home (but still about an hour away).

They will have initial travel and accommodations costs, as well as equipment to purchase. Ongoing costs will continue to be supporting his transportation to the therapy setting. They will be ongoing costs.
