Homesteading in Hawaii!

Homesteading in Hawaii!

From Rachel Ross

Aloha! I am officially a steward of land on the Big Island of Hawaii. After a year of living off grid learning how to build water catchment, a composting toilet, and solar - I am ready to grow and expand. Continue below!

Aloha everyone, and thank you for being here to read my story and support my journey. I appreciate your time.

I moved to Hawaii from NYC during the pandemic with the intentions of learning how to live off of the land. That intention has come true - as I am officially a land and yurt owner and novice homesteader on the Big Island of Hawaii!

The caveat? The land and yurt was BARREN. The ground is lava rock, and having sat for many years it is becoming extremely fertile soil. Inside the Yurt there is no electricity or running water, and when I first moved in it was filled with boxes and scaffolding (which I used as a bed for quite some time…).

At first glance, I’ll admit I was very skeptical. Yet, upon entering the space I had this innate feeling of “yep, this is it. This is where I will be”. I had no idea that my journey would take me to literally building everything from the ground up - literally and metaphorically - and ohhh what a trip this has been!

Imagine... GLAMPING full time

I have learned how to catch rain water in extremely creative ways, and have walked through the full process of filtering it, upgrading the system, and installing a shower with rain water that I harvested.

I’ve taught myself about Solar, and with help from my friends installed solar panels, a water pump, and have enough sustainable power to charge my laptop (still no frigde!).  I’ve learned about batteries and how to function during phases where it rains nonstop and there is no sun.

I designed (and am currently designing/building) a bathhouse and a fully functional composting toilet that will eventually become soil to plant with. These projects still have a lot of work left!

It has been all consuming, yet extremely rewarding work.

Interwoven through all of this, there has been so much healing, shedding and rebirth within this process for me. It is quite metaphorical how I left my past life to venture into connecting with the land and coming back to my roots. I am building my entire life's foundation from the ground up- spiritually, mentally, and physically.

Alongside me building my homestead, I am also living my dream of teaching Yoga and Embodiment Dance Classes at a gorgeous retreat center, and am currently creating a Women’s Mentorship Program to bring women closer to our cycles, emotions, thoughts, and how to move through this life in the highest alignment with ourselves. I’ve lived 100 lives in my seemingly short time on this earth, and all of these lessons and journeys are catapulting me into stepping into my voice and sharing these gifts with the world.

Though I am not yet at a place where my creations are able to fully support me!

I am at a pivotal part of my journey, and I have utilized all of the resources that life has offered me thus far and what I have worked so hard to build. I’m currently at a stand still as my seeds germinate.

Now, for the first time in my life I’m in a place where I am asking for help and support to continue on my journey of creation. I still need to upgrade my solar panels, install piping for clean running water, make installations to the Yurt, and I would LOVE to plant more trees and food on this new soil.

If you feel genuinely pulled to give to my cause, I appreciate your contribution.

Mahalo for your time and energy
