We are raising money to buy the Hernandez family a lot for a house to be built on. They currently live in a tin shack in the city of Monjas Jalapa, Guatemala.
Oscar and Maria Hernandez are a couple in the city of Monjas Jalapa, Guatemala. They have two young girls Maria Guadalupe and Sheily Paola. Guadalupe and Sheily are very vivacious and outgoing young girls. They are always excited to see visitors come. Neither Oscar nor Maria received any education. Oscar is missing his left hand. Most of the work in the Monjas area is in the fields which is very difficult even with two good hands. Oscar is unable to find good employment in the area but he goes to work every day making about $2 to $3 per day. Oscar and Maria do know the value of an education so they are making sure their daughters are attending school.
This family lives in a tin shack with a dirt floor on a vacant lot in Monjas. They do not own the lot so are at risk of being evicted at any time. They cook over an open fire inside the house and smoke always fills the air. Their toilet is a small square of tin with a cloth curtain the middle of what otherwise is the dining area. They have neither electricity nor running water. We have visited them when fire ants were biting our ankles.
Most teams who come to the children’s home where Sue and I serve eat out once during the week they are here. They usually eat at a local restaurant which we frequent. It is close to Oscar and Maria’s house so we often take leftovers to them. They are very excited to receive the gift of food and quickly offer praise to God and prayer for the teams.
We feel that Guadalupe and Sheily are in danger of not being able to attend school. They are at risk of falling back into the cycle of poverty. They and their parents are in desperate need of a descent place to live. We feel they could thrive under better living conditions.
We have identified an organization that would be willing to build a small house for Oscar and Maria. Their only stipulation is that they must own the lot. Of course they cannot afford to buy a lot, so we would like to provide them the funds to purchase it. We are looking for property in the area. A small area about 10 meters by 15 meters (30 by 45 feet) will cost between $8,000 and $10,000. We are asking our friends, neighbors, and church families for assistance in making this a reality.
