Mother Teresa once said, “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples.” The Elkia Foundation’s mission is to change the world one ripple at a time by continuing our outreach to the homeless and the disenfranchised, providing low-income and developing communities with the resources and training needed to put an end to generational poverty. Our nonprofit started in July of 2018, and since then, we have made strides in bettering the lives of low-income communities in the Miami area. One of our most successful events was held in December of 2018, when the Foundation held a Christmas Giving event in Brownsville, Miami. In collaboration with State Representative Bush III, the President of the Brownsville Neighborhood Association, and Feeding South Florida we provided residents with holiday cheer by offering food, refreshments, a Santa Claus, children’s gifts, license renewal services, raffle prizes, face painting, and a live DJ. One senior resident was so taken by the event that she said, “I’ve lived in this neighborhood for all my life, and they never had anything like this.” In addition to the event, we focused on seven families and provided them individually with a holiday meal, a Christmas tree, and presents. Among the people who made up these families were a gunshot victim and a senior citizen caring for seven children ages 2-8 because she did not want them to be separated or placed in the foster care system.
