Herb has poured his heart and soul into lifting the spirits of millions of people around the world through his music. We now have a chance to give back to the couple we all love.
It is very sad to announce that Herbert Allen (88), composer, arranger, and xylophone virtuoso, died peacefully March 3 in Tucson. Born in 1929 in Seattle, Allen was recognized at an early age as a musical prodigy.
He was a founder of Up with People in 1965, its music director for 30 years, and a mentor to the thousands who would make a mark through music and public service. They performed in 60 nations on 6 continents.
In 1976 Up with People created the modern half-time spectacular at Super Bowl X. Allen conducted the show’s 400 young performers with 90 million watching on TV. Three more Super Bowl halftimes would follow.
In 2004 at a Lifetime Achievement ceremony, Allen received tributes from David Grossman, VP of Paramount Pictures for TV music, and Marilyn Bergman, president of A.S.C.A.P. Award-winning record producer David Mackay called Herb “the greatest musician I know.” Herb will be remembered by thousands, young and old, for his warm, unquenchable spirit, love and compassion, his humor, and profound humanity.
In mid-June of this year, Jane Allen, Herb’s wife and beloved life companion of 60 years, suffered a stroke. In addition, a few weeks later had a fall and broke her hip.
She has made significant progress but is now wheelchair bound. She is in an adult care facility called Starfish where she resides currently and as well going forward.
Financial help is of great support is being requested as her long-term insurance does not cover her overall costs at Starfish.
We are asking friends of Herb and Jane to make a small monthly pledge to help with her care. If 120 friends will contribute a minimum $10.00 to $20.00 per month on a re-occurring basis, we will alleviate her financial pressure, and ensure the quality of care and life that she deserves.
