More Info

Hydrocephalus is the term used when excess cerebrospinal fluid Accumulated atop of the brain. This causes many issues, including limiting a child’s social and physical development. If not caught in time, (usually by noticing an extreme growth in head circumference,) the condition is highly deadly; or can bring on more serious disease or illness. Most children will have to first undergo shunt placement surgery, hoping it can solve the fluid drainage issue. These become infected quite often, so the actual number of surgeries varies. Growing older, they are often far behind the peers in their own age group. Walking, talking, and basic motor skill / coordination functions fall drastically behind. Often they will find theirselves requiring medically necessary tools, and training items, which can be very expensive. (Even with insurance!) A commonly prescribed stander/walking device can run around $6,000 on average. A frequent neurosurgeon checkup is required; not to mention physical, occupational, and speech therapy classes; often several times a week. For this, and other reasons, parents cannot leave the children alone, or feel comfortable with a babysitter / daycare, which causes them to be unable to pursue a normal away-from-home career. This brings great financial hardship to them, and their loved ones alike.
