8/12/19 UPDATE!

Dom is doing well at inpatient rehab here at Children's. They are so amazing here and we are so blessed to have this facility so close!

We aren't sure when we will get to go home, but he has said that although he doesn't like being in the hospital, he is happy that he is here because everyone is so friendly and they make us feel so comfortable and cared for.

Thank you all for your continued support. We feel the love!

More Info

This Wednesday, July 31, 2019, Dom will be having a Sub-occipital Decompression Craniotomy with a C-1 Laminectomy. The surgery begins at 8:00 A.m., and is expected to last well into the evening (10-12 hours). If Dom, an incoming Sophomore at Dougherty Valley High School, makes a perfect recovery through the surgery, he will still be spending at least 5 days in the ICU.

During the surgery, a tumor on his brain stem will be removed, and will be sent to pathology to determine if the tumor is benign or malignant. Much of the success of this surgery will depend upon how much the tumor has integrated itself into his brain stem, and whether or not there are further complications to consider.

This tumor was found while Dom was getting an MRI for an upcoming Scoliosis surgery, a condition he has dealt with throughout his life. Although dealing with the Scoliosis has had its' own set of challenges and hurdles, we are so grateful that during this process, this tumor was found, and can be dealt with in an urgent manner.

This young man is 15- he loves video games, coding and playing his electric guitar. His mother, Alisa, wants nothing more than to see him be a kid again, and put all of this behind them. In order to make that happen, she had to take a leave of absence from both of her jobs, in order to take him to all of his pre-op appointments, and to stay with him at Children's Hospital during and after the surgery.

The expenses that we are expecting to deal with are:

*Medically-related expenses (co-pays, meds, medical supplies, etc.)

*Adjustable bed conducive to his height (he's already 6'1")!

*Rent, utilities, etc. that are usually paid by Mom's salary, but she has to take off work to care for him.

*Hotel near the hospital so that she can be close to her son.

I realize that for many of us, times are tight financially, so if you are unable to give financially, please consider donating goods or services, as those are needed as well. I thank you for opening your heart to this family, and all prayers and healing wishes will also be much appreciated!!

Update #2

On Saturday night, Dom was moved out of ICU, to a different floor. This has been a very positive change for him. Finally, he is eating little bites of food, and seems to be feeling a little more himself The first 2-3 days after surgery, he was really depressed.

He will need to go to rehab after he leaves the surgical floor. It looks like this will be a long journey, and we really don't yet know when he will be able to return home. The doctors are planning for at least 1-2 weeks of in-patient rehab to address his mobility issues. Both his right arm, and right leg are affected.

Again- thank you for all of your support- I am so encouraged by all of the love we have been shown through this. THANK YOU!!

Update #1

Dom went through 10 hours of surgery yesterday. They were able to get some of the tumor, but not all of it. It is integrated into his brain stem. The doctor could not tell where the tumor ended, and his brain stem began. As they shaved pieces of the tumor, they would check his sensory monitors. The minute there was a change, they stopped. It was his right arm that showed change. We are hoping for restoration of a deficit in sensory ability.

Now that he is awake and exhibiting signs of his amazing sense of humor, we are thrilled! He has already shushed me more than once! Thank you for your continued support through this challenging time- you are all so appreciated!
