Help Us Support Resettling a Family

Help Us Support Resettling a Family

From Amelia Eanes

We are sponsoring a family of six who courageously evaded persecution from the Taliban. We will use funds to help them obtain jobs, housing, transportation, clothes, food, and navigate the US visa process.

Update #4

Hi Everyone! This will be our last update to help preserve the family's privacy but I am happy to say they are on their way to being resettled.

Roughly half of your donations are going to the International Rescue Committee which is taking on their case. Those donations will go toward their rent for 6 months, utilities, cell phone needs, and background checks for those volunteering on our sponsor team.

The other half will go to purchasing furnishings for their home that cannot be donated, climate-appropriate clothes, various applications, and more.

We cannot thank you enough for your generous donations to resettling this family. Our team of volunteers is now focused on setting the family up to succeed as they navigate their new life in America!

Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks again.

More Info

We have left out personally identifiable information to protect the family's privacy and safety until they are here in the states.

In mid-August 2021, we chose to sponsor a family we know through their sister and aunt, who was college-educated in Virginia. After graduating, she worked for Oxfam International and the United Nations Development Programme where she managed two major portfolios on Justice and Human Rights as well as Anticorruption and Transparency. She then graduated with an MSc Public Policy in the UK, and continued to be a vocal advocate for women's rights until she was killed the following month in a car accident.

Over the last twenty years, her brother worked for a prominent human rights organization in Afghanistan. He and his wife's other passions are farming and gardening.

Her nieces were empowered to pursue their education at the University of Kabul before it was recently taken by the Taliban. The eldest daughter was in her last year of Computer Science and the youngest daughter had just switched majors from Dutch to Nursing. Due to their ethnoreligious status and their family's activities in human and women's rights, they can no longer live safely and pursue their dreams in their home country.

Their five-year-old little brother, whose writing you see here in the picture, is excited to know how to count to 100 in English and spell in English.

Through acts of extreme bravery and love, powered by their family friends here in the US, the family was able to escape to a third country where their visas to the US are being processed. As their sponsors, we are working with our community and mutual family friends to provide them housing, education, jobs, transportation, clothes, food, and legal support to navigate the continuing visa process once they get here.

We want to express that this fundraiser is for this family only and that if you want to donate to larger funds that support more broadly, there are more out there. Additionally, our thoughts and prayers go out to every family, American and allied, whose lives have been impacted by recent events.

We want to make a positive impact where we can. And helping a family who didn't choose to be in this harrowing position, where they were forced to flee their home and belongings, is one way we can.

Update #3

Update #3

Hi Everyone! Our family's application is still being processed. They have been interviewed on-site and it sounds like it went well! But a case of COVID in the building caused a quarantine mandate, which has slowed things down a bit.

Now they're out of quarantine and ramping up flights to the US. Hoping that our family gets approved and gets here soon!

Please feel free to send me a message for more updates.

Update #2

Just a quick update! Our family was interviewed today in part for their applications to the US. Their applications are still being processed but we are hopeful that their applications will be approved soon!

Unfortunately, there has been a small COVID outbreak at their camp so they can't go outside again for a while. We are really hoping they can get here soon to have some sense of normalcy, given the incredible trauma they have endured.

Please keep us in your thoughts and share the fundraiser if you can, because they will need all the support they can get when they arrive and get their feet on the ground!

Update #1

Hello Everyone! I want to thank you all for donating so selflessly. Your support is overwhelming and our family is so grateful.

We got all six of the USCIS case numbers for each family member today. We are continuing to campaign to our congresspeople to help expedite their cases.

I will post updates here as the process moves along. Thank you all for your continued support and love!

Amelia
