Update #7

Hello everyone!

We've got some terrific news! Doctor McBride, Leia's vet, called to let us know the results of the biopsy. And...

IT'S BENIGN!

What a huge relief!! Our General Leia is in terrific shape!

She's had her bandages removed from where the growths were removed, so she's back in the cone of shame for a bit longer. Every day, she gets more and more comfortable here at home. Our next step is to focus more on training. She may be a general, but she still needs to have manners on walks and the like. ;)

Finally, we are almost to the 2/3s mark. If you know of any folks who may be able to help, please do point them to the page. Many thanks!

More Info

On 10 January this year, our family had to say goodbye to our family dog, Sadie.  She was an amazing pup and we figured we’d have lots of time to mourn and remember her before we opened our house to a new dog.

Well, Nature abhors a vacuum, apparently.

The very next day we were alerted to a dog in desperate need.  It seemed we were her only hope.  Much like the scrappy band who rescued a princess from the Death Star, we decided that we had to do everything we could for our Leia.  And just like in the movie, we learned that she was probably rescuing us.

Meet Leia.  She’s a senior Malamute/Shiba Inu mix.  While we do not know the exact circumstances of why her owner was convinced to surrender her, she does have many obvious signs of neglect—particularly in regards to her teeth.

Her previous veterinary records suggest that she has not had significant medical attention since 2017.  Her face has two very swollen, weeping sores (that’s due to the teeth issues), and she has a few legions and growths in need of removal and biopsy.  And that’s were we could use some help.

Our family was prepared to take on as much of her medical debt as we could handle.  Anything too significant would result in us needing to surrender her to a rescue who could afford the care.  Thankfully, her initial visits to the animal hospital have been favorable, but this dental visit and growth biopsy is where it gets tough.  Because there are at least two teeth that need to be extracted (insurance does not cover it), and because of the biopsy, we are faced with a 2K bill this week.  (This is after the insurance and discounts have been applied.)

If you have a little extra fun money, would you consider helping out our Princess? Sorry, GENERAL.

Now for the good news:

For an 11 year old dog, her skeleton is in great shape.  No bulging discs, no displaced joints.  Her blood work came back terrific.  All organs look excellent.  So, really, it’s just the teeth and growths setting her back.

She is the sweetest old gal, too.  She’s melted all hearts at the animal hospital and everyone who meets her is soon wrapped around her paw.  She’s become very attached to Taylor (which is what we had hoped) and the two of them are thriving together!

Update #6

Start chilling the bubbly, because as of today we are at the halfway point of paying all the debt incurred in getting Leia's teeth fixed and the biopsies completed.

We chatted with the vet today and Leia's doctors is well pleased with her progress. Leia is free of the "cone of shame" now--HURRAY! and her bandages will be removed soon. Sadly, the results of the biopsy have still not come in, but our hopes are high.

Update #5

HUGE thank yous to everyone of you who has been so generous with your donations! We are nearly to the halfway point and we are so deeply thankful to you all.

Yesterday, Leia had her first doggie play date with Balin! The meeting went far better than any of could have expected, so we are very hopeful for more malamute play dates in the future. Thank you, Kristina Gundersen-Rudmann for the terrific photo here of the two of them.

Regarding her recovery, she is doing so well. Leia dutifully takes her medication straight from Taylor's hand--no peanut butter or pill pockets needed! We've started softening her food with water and she usually eats most of her meals. For a gal who just had FIVE teeth pulled, that's terrific! She is still in the "cone of shame" for a while longer, but even that hasn't dampened her spirits too much.

Thank you again to all supporters and members of Leia's recovery team. I do hope that, if you haven't, you wll consider making a donation toward her medical bills.

Update #4

Leia had a pretty restful night!

She slept quite a bit, but she perked up at about 2 am to eat, use the potty, and take her meds. However, Taylor could not leave her side and had to keep a hand on her throughout the entire night to keep her calm.

At about 7 am it was Walk time, and she had a grand outing with her normal energy levels! She didn't like that her new E-collar prevents her from really getting into all the good smells, but still managed to get a few in. She happily scarfed down breakfast, so her appetite seems to be back to normal as well!

So, after our little afternoon stroll, and her longing for a car ride, it is time for some napping and lounging around the house.

Update #3

Leia is home!

Taylor is laying with her as she is still groggy and adjusting to having multiple teeth pulled. We are trying to get ahead of her pain right now. The doctor gave us plenty of meds to help.

In some good news: even though more teeth needed pulling that we'd hoped, the total bill was a bit less than projected. As such, we've updated the final goal to $1865.

Update #2

We have a vet update!

Just got word from Dr. McBride:

Leia is in recovery, but what we thought was only going to be two teeth being pulled turned into five. Leia had an additional loose tooth and another tooth cracked straight through the middle, plus one of her bottom canines had to go.

She had a lump on her front right arm that was removed, and Dr. McBride is hopeful the biopsy will come back benign. Plus a skin tag on her back left was removed while she was already under.

While under Dr. McBride noticed that Leia was still rather aware, so she had to use more to try and help keep her sedated.

Otherwise everything went okay. Leia is currently resting and will be home tonight.

We will know for SURE when Taylor picks her up from the vet in a few, but otherwise it looks like the 2K estimate may be on the low end of the actual costs. **sigh**

We will be sure to keep you all updated when we have the final totals.

We are SO grateful to all of you for everything that you've done to support Leia. I wanted to share the cost breakdown of her surgery so folks can see why we felt it necessary to ask all of you for help.
