My eulogy for my sister.

Trade wars – email servers – boarder walls – Muslim immigrants – an ISIS terrorist in a supermarket in France – 9-11 – homicide in the Oleander area
Some ask themselves: What has the world come to?
Fear is a very human thing. But it hampers our performance and endangers our community.
Since the old days human beings have therefore tried to find wayz to overcome fear.
Religion is one of them.
Joshua 1:9 reads: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
A Sure in the Quran states: “And we will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and loss of wealth and life and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.”
A Hindu prayer reads: “Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers, but to be fearless in facing them. Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain, but for the heart to conquer it.”
Buddha said: “You must realize that fear is not real. It is a product of the thoughts you create. Do not misunderstand me, danger is very real, but fear is a choice.
F E A R can stand for:
- Forget Everything And Run or
- Face Everything And Rise
Face everything and rise.
Does that not mean: Reach out, come together? Just how far are you gonna get on your own?
When I was asked to describe my sister in one short sentence I answered without hesitation: A big heart.
This is the unique quality we human beings have: When we come together, unite and open our hearts and our doors, we rise. Together.
We, my mother, my daughter and myself, have experienced just this coming here to Florida.
I jokingly said that we could stay here for two months and be invited to dinner at a different house every night. We tried to be with as many as you as we could, we couldn’t possibly talk to all of you in the short two weeks that we were here. I know you understand and forgive us.
I want to thank you.
I want to thank Steve and Debbie Dale who hosted us for two weeks and cared for us like family. We have become friends during that time and I’m sure will be visiting each other some more in years to come.
All those who have donated to make this event dignified and memorable
All the friends and neighbors who hosted us and comforted us in these hard times
All those who are here today to remember my sister and all those who couldn’t make it but are with us in their thoughts and prayers.
Today we also think of Ashley Boice and her family and their tragic loss of Gary. We are so glad that Ashley is here today!
Humanity and friendship know no borders and reach across language barriers. And make you feel at home. I always say I’m split down the middle, half German/half American. This country to me is just as much a home as the country I was born at and live in.
My sister felt very much at home here. Part of the community. She had found new love and hope. She left the stage when it was the most beautiful.
If that thing we call the heavens exists, Gary and Gabriele will live there happily forever after.
Farewell, sister!
Chip Anderson - I forgive you! You were a weak person, and being a buddhist I hope that in your next life you‘ll be a strong person, loving and caring, to make up for what you have done.

Prologue: This is not a scam. Its real life. This has happened, and I am who I claim to be. This is us mourning and trying to find answers. This is us seeing light at the end of the tunnel, and looking at a glas half full. Because it has to be. Otherwise there would be no going on. This is me asking for your generosity and compassion. This is me trying to "be comfortable in chaos", as one British Major I had the honor to serve with during my time in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, liked to put it.

I am a commissioned officer in the German Armed Forces, I’ve been an Instructor at the U.S. Army Military Police School for over 2 years about ten years back. I’m also a single dad of a soon-to-be 8 year old sweet girl and I try to raise her as a decent and happy person. We live together with my mother of 79 year, which I took in after my father’s death in 2013.

With a guarantee for a loan my late brother-in-law took I have been paying back for over 17 years now and a unhappy marriage that ended in costly legal procedures I have been struggling financially for a long time now. But through private loans from friends and a tight spending regime I never had to file personal bankruptcy, which would have violated my personal honor code anyway,  and was able to always have us keep our head above the water.

Please excuse my semi-clumsy English, it’s not my mother tongue, but I try to paint a solid picture.

Now, living a modest life we saw light at the end of that specific tunnel when I was able to re-finance some debt under the current low APRs. But this week we have been hit with a total tragedy: My beloved sister who has lived in the U.S. for over 14 years now, widow of a U.S. citizen, has been murdered. It has been in the local news in Florida for a few days now, the Sherrif‘s office had been looking for the next of kin since then.

My mother understandably broke down and I am pretty devastated, too, as I was very close to my sister, who was loved in her Florida neighborhood as a creative renovator of homes and a true and funny soul.

I have organized for my mother, my daughter and me to fly to Florida next week to take care of my sisters funeral and her personal affairs. Booking flights, rental car and hotel and thinking about the cost for a funeral and to close all open ends of my sisters‘ life that has ended so tragically, I‘ve come to realize that the financial burden could very well be too much for me to swallow.

I would so like to give my sister a proper funeral with all her many American friends attending, just a celebration of love, hope and the spirit of community despite the horrible way she has been ripped from our lives. But without your kind and generous help I just won’t be able to afford that.

Please help me and my family to make this farewell a positive and pious celebration rather then an administrative act!  May God bless you all!

Update #8

First week in the U.S. is over, and I‘ve gone through pretty much all my sister‘s papers... Oh my, she has kept every single slip and invoice of the last 15 years... But last night I finally found a will! Nothing that would hold up in court, since it’s neither witnessed nor notarized. But still. It‘s good to know that what I‘m doing is in line with what she wanted.

Update #6

Nothing is sacred for scammers, right? Received a message like „I am a business man/philantropist from London and I was moved by your story. I just donated 3700 Dollars, let me know how far you go.“ only to receive a mail later that I would be required to buy five 100 Dollar iTunes cards, scratch the codes free and take pictures of them and send them to some faked payment portal address in order to „unlock“ these funds.

This is a sick world sometimes...

Update #4

I am urgently looking to get in contact with Ashley Boice. If anyone from the PSL area knows her please let her know! I only have two weeks to close a life with everything that comes with it, bank accounts, car loans, insurances, IRS, you name it. So organization is gonna be key, and I need to set up as much as I can BEFORE I even get to Florida.

We are overwhelmed by the help and kind offers we are getting from the local community in Florida, thank all of you so much! It‘s crazy complicated to organize things from 5000 miles away, even in times of the Internet etc. I’m confident that I can work this out in an efficent and graceful way, thanks to all of you. Thank you all again!

Update #3

I am positive that we‘ll reach this goal with y‘all‘s help (<– my Missouri time shows here, right?) and I hope to being able to organize the funeral and a get together afterwards shortly before we fly back.

Please reserve Saturday, March 24 in your schedules for attending Gabriele‘s funeral.

I will not be able to invite every single friend and neighbor personally, since I have to take care of a lot of things in the 2 weeks that I have. So if you or someone you know consider yourself a friend or just want to express your love or find consolation and closure, please feel free to attend!

I will post more details as I have them.

Update #2

We have been offered to stay in the neighborhood for our time in Florida! I am deeply thankful for this generous offer, and I have received other calls and notices of sympathy from her friends and neighbors in the last two days.

We can‘t thank you enough!

Update #1

Eurowings has cancelled the flight to Miami yesterday. Oh great, that's just what we needed... but it cannot be helped. Those are the moments when you catch yourself thinking: Is this all a big test? Or the phrase "out of the movies" comes to mind...
