Raising university tuition funds to study petroleum engineering at the University of Surrey London, United Kingdom. A good education will be a life changing opportunity for me, which will set me up for a bright future.
I am raising university tuition funds to study petroleum engineering at the University of Surrey London, United Kingdom. Throughout my primary school through to college, I have been a studious and determined girl, with straight As and a pristine disciplinary record. My dream is become an engineer, who brings amazing solutions to societal challenges. Despite the emotional, mental, and financial challenges faced ,I have remained determined and feisty.
This cause is very important to me because a good university education will equip me with the knowledge, experiences and skills I need, to help me break away from the circle of poverty in which a big part of our community finds itself. As a young black girl in a 3rd world country, education is my escape from premature marriage and pregnancy , recklessness, prostitution, crime, and much worse.
Born into a modest family in Cameroon, West Africa, dad was a hard worker and provided for our family. Growing up, I heard many tales about dad’s extreme generosity. Even at the time of his death, he offered full scholarships for primary school kids in his birth village, who couldn't afford tuition. My grandparents were farmers, yet dad worked so hard to migrate from the village to the city, where he worked his way up to the middle class. Unfortunately, in 2006 on his way to work, dad’s car was crushed by a speeding truck , and dad never made it to the hospital alive.Without any financial plan, the family was now left in limbo. I was only two years old when this happened, and the impact on my life has been immeasurable. Not only did we lose our sweet dad without a goodbye, we lost our rock and provider. I am incredible grateful to God, family and friends for the progress I have made in my life thus far. Conscious of the family's financial situation, my revenge was to be the best student in my class every academic year. In 2019, to reduce the financial burden for my widowed mum, I decided to sit the GCE O levels exams in form 4 instead of form 5, and with my determination to succeed, passed with 10As and 1B. In 2020, I was accepted into the Yale Young Global Scholars , Applied Science & Engineering III sessions representing over 145 countries with over 7000 applicants, and was blessed with a $6300 full tuition scholarship. Although the course was dispensed remotely due to covid-19, the two weeks exposure was immensely rewarding , I learned so much, and became even more fired up to become a successful engineer like dad , and to continue his philanthropic legacy.
In March 2021,i got multiple university offers including King's college London, but chose to study Chemical and petroleum engineering at the University of Surrey London, and this opportunity is a dream come true for me. Schools resume on September 20th 2021, and I am expected to have paid at least 30% of my tuition and other related fees by July 31st 2021.
My total tuition is just over £22,000, and I am truly encouraged by the support I have already received but still need help reaching the fundraising goal of £22,000.
