Help Send Sarah to Lesley

From Sarah Harmer

I have been accepted into a prestigious drama therapy program at Lesley University, but am unable to pay for it. I am asking for support to help me with my dream to become a licensed drama therapist to serve my community

"Success means we go to sleep at night knowing that our talents and abilities were used in a way that served others." -Marianne Williamson

This quote is my life's credo.

I recently was accepted to a prestigious therapy program, at Lesley University, into their Master's program in Expressive Therapies with a focus in Drama Therapy. I interviewed and they emailed me a week later telling me I had been accepted, I am 1 of 8 accepted into this cohort.

As you may know that for the past 2 years, after completing a Master's degree in Theatre Education from Emerson College, that I have been working in a school-based behavioral program. I work with children with varying situations, emotional and mental health disorders, and have had the true honor to introduce the kids to theatre. It has been incredibly moving, challenging and beautiful. These children are brilliant and see the world through a lens that we can't begin to imagine. I have seen the power that theatre has first hand time and time again and know this is what I have been created for, to use theatre as therapy. I did a LOT of research into the evidence that this type of therapy is effective with the populations I work for and it is indeed. The mental health field is growing exponentially, getting a clinical license is a no risk situation, I would absolutely have work. Here's the problem, it is expensive.

Since Lesley piloted drama therapy in the US, so it has some costs. I have received a small scholarship and have some federal aid, but already hold a good deal of school debt from my other two degrees and for the future of my family cannot take out another private loan.

It is completely devastating to me to think of coming this far and not being able to take this final career step in what I know is my purpose, to work in education to use theatre as healing for the children and families in my community.

Everything I have done and worked for thus far in my career has led me here, every job, every student, every project.

So here is the BIG picture: As part of the requirements of the program, there is a mandatory on-campus residency every summer for the 3 years, meaning I won't get paid for 3 weeks. Obviously this is a problem as I am an adult and have bills that don't care if I am at school. So, after Federal Aid and my scholarship I need around $7500 for the remaining balance of each year, and the cost of not getting paid for a total of 9 weeks, daycare for my daughter, andbooks. This donation page has been set up to raise money for the remaining costs of the program. Here is the real deal, I actually cannot do this without support and will have to pull out of the program. I am looking for anything, every little bit counts.

I truly believe it takes a village and I am reaching out to mine now.

Thank you all for your support over the years, now and in the future.
