Update #5

Hi everyone, it's been awhile since my last update so I want to reach out. We still don't have a definitive diagnosis for Gus as we are still waiting on the results of his biopsies. I took Gus to see an internal medicine specialist north of Ft. Lauderdale and she recommended we treat for a systemic fungal disease and await the results to make a full treatment plan. For now the scruff is taking two heavy duty anti-fungals. The good news is he seems to be feeling a bit better. I will update you all with more info as soon as we have it. Thank you so much for all your support ❤️

Friends,

Our beloved puppy, Gus, has been sick for the last month. We have taken him to the vet many times and they thought it was a trauma injury. Recently we found out that he is much sicker than initially anticipated. We have gone to see a specialist at UF Veterinary Hospital. They think Gus has a serious and life threatening systemic infection. They are still conduct tests to determine how to treat it.

As many of you know, the last year has been extremely difficult for my and Michael's families.  Gus has been our support and has helped us to survive our grief. We need to do the best we can to help him survive.

To date we have spent ~$3,000 on tests trying to find out what is making Gus so sick. Treatment could include CT scans, surgery and/or months of expensive medication. The vet told us this will be a long treatment. The bills will rack up.

We don’t like asking others for help but feel we must in order to give Gus the best chance to survive. Anything helps. If you are able please consider contributing, it would mean so much to us. We know that many of you are not able to contribute. Please send Gus your love and healing thoughts and share this page so that we can get the word out.

We love you all and will keep you updated. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers, we will need it. Thank you for all your support.

Update #6

Hey Guys Supporters,

We got good but still inconclusive news from the vet yesterday. Gus' histopathology report came back and showed and autoimmune skin disorder, which is treatable. This would explain the ulcer on his side but does not explain his eye infection (bloody discharge) or congestion (bloody sneezing). We are still waiting on the micro bacterial and the fungal cultures to come back. They could take up to another week. in the meantime Gus' wound is not healing properly. We are working with our vet to get the wound and his pain under control. Thank you all for your continued support and love. I think that Gus feels it. Love to you all ❤️

Update #5

Hi Gus supporters!

Thank you all so much for gathering around us while things are hard. I was just thinking how lucky I am to have such supportive people in my life. Love to each and every one of you.

Gus had a hard night last night. He was restless and in pain and somehow got out one of his stitches (despite being watched, wearing a cone and a shirt). We took him to the vet today to have his wound checked and to re-check his vitals. He checked out ok but is obviously in a lot of pain. Our vet recommended acupuncture which Gus had this afternoon. He is doing much better since that treatment and is resting calmly. Here is a picture of Gus during his acupuncture treatment. If anyone is looking for a lovely kind acupuncturist in the upper keys Gus can make a recommendation!

Thanks again for all your support <3 More updates as soon as we have them.

Update #2

Hi everyone, we are overwhelmed with the generous support from all of you. It reminds me that even when times seem dark there is light and love around us. We are forever grateful.

Gus was stable overnight and there is not much they can do for him until results from the tests come back next week. We are taking him back to Key Largo and will be monitoring him closely. We will update as soon as we have more info. Thanks again for all your love.

Update #1

Thank you all so much for your support! Gus was admitted to UF Veterinary Hospital and they took biopsies of a lump on his side. They have submitted them to the lab for tests and we hope this will give us the information that we need to make a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan. These should be in by next week. In the meantime Gus is on nine different medications to treat for pain, and eye infection, nasal congestion and prevent further infection. We will send more updates as soon as we have them. Thank you for your well wishes. They are helping to keep our spirits up.
