Update #3

Dear supporters of this campaign
far and wide...

GREAT NEWS!

We are VERY happy to announce that we successfully raised the funds we needed and were thus able to complete our work here on Lesvos. In fact, we had such strong support on this project that we have been able to provide not only stoves, but also truckloads of scrap wood for fuel to those in need.

Thanks to your support, the most vulnerable families of the Olive Grove camp are staying warm in this coldest winter in years.

With leftover funds and a few days on our hands, we invested in more scrap metal and created one more basic service to keep children off the roads: a playground that now sits in the middle of the Olive Grove camp. Much has happened since we began our work here, and if you are reading this, you are part of this.

Soon we’ll be sharing the stories on our pages, along with updates of what will come next. So join us in celebrating, and spread the message of hope to your circles: we all need it!!

In one of the most dire situations in Europe, this project has made a powerful impression on people here: that it doesn’t take a big name or big budget to get things done, just strong, human connections between local community and the incredibly skilled, committed people of the asylum seeker communities. We hope this can be a model for other communities hosting migrants, to work together to address common issues. In diversity lies strength, and this was our secret for success throughout our time here on Lesvos.

So to everyone who helped us make this work possible... THANK YOU!

We also thank our team of volunteers who worked tirelessly and more than anyone, those friends from the camps—asylum seekers themselves—who put their skilled hands, heads and hearts to work with us. Its been a humbling experience for us all, and only the beginning of our chapter as we cross Europe towards our final destination of Scotland.

Thank you once more, to everyone who contributed to this effort, and please do reach out to us on email/FB. We’d love to hear how you feel, knowing you helped this project happen!

Soon Victor will send out a full Update Newsletter, with some of the fantastic photos we've captured and stories from Lesvos. Please let us know over email if you'd like to receive this!

With deep gratitude, solidarity and a tired by happy team,
yours in One world, One family,

-Ben, Prashant and the entire Lesvos crew!

More Info

Context Lesbos Island is home to more than 10,000 refugees, people fleeing violence, poverty, instability and persecution. Conditions are hard in the official refugee camps and, with winter now beginning many residents have no source of heating. We’ve met families who burn open fires and many who simply cannot sleep at night due to the cold.

Our Solution We designed and tested a prototype stove that will serve as a heater as well as a safe cooking stove.

We plan to provide refugee communities with the raw materials and to construct these small stoves from scrap metals, using simple techniques of upcycling.

The stove is robust, safe and effective and this is where we need YOU!

The unofficial refugee camp hosts about 600 households and we are aiming to make one stove for every family without heating.

FUNDRAISING GOAL

Each stove costs about £10 to build. With 600 families without heating, we are trying to raise £6000 before Christmas to make this project happen!

By donating £10, you’re empowering a team of refugees and Greeks to keep one family warm this winter!Every little bit counts, please spread the word and help us make this a reality!

Yours in One world, One family,-Prashant Kumar, Ben Reid-Howells and the whole team.

Update #2

Dear everyone, we're getting there! We've had 40 donors on this platform, and each donation is helping us pump out more stoves. Last night for New Year's we spent the night in the Olive Grove camp and shared music and food. Prashant cooked a fantastic biryani and our friends in the camp brought out musicians, families and many of the people we've been working with till now.

As this project continues so does the community grow of people making it happen, which includes you.

Thank you so much for joining us here on Lesvos. Please write us an email at <[email protected]> we love hearing directly from the people making our work possible!

With snow on the forecast this week, we're keen to finish the stoves as fast as possible. Please share the word as we come into the middle of this campaign.

Sending New Year's warmth to everyone reading this!
-Ben, Prashant and the whole team on the ground here on Lesvos.
