Hello there. As some of you may know, I was recently called to the bar in Ontario after a somewhat wayward journey through the thickets of the legal profession. I obtained my JD from Osgoode Hall Law School, and completed my Hon BA in English and Cinema Studies at the University of Toronto. I'm starting my solo law practice -- NG Defence (coming soon!) -- and will be specializing in criminal defence law.
I knew I wanted to practice criminal law as soon as I started law school, and I have focused the majority of my legal studies and work experience in preparation for a career in criminal defence. I've worked at several criminal law firms in Toronto before I graduated law school and during my articles, having gained valuable experience both in and out of the courts. I've also worked at various legal aid clinics during my studies, representing low-income clients in summary offence cases. I've worked on a diverse array of cases, from minor offences like assault all the way up to first degree murder files. I'm ambitious and attentive to my study of the law, having received straight As in all my criminal law courses, including the highest mark in Evidence Law, for which I received the Kenneth Gibson Morden Memorial Prize in Evidence.
The freedom of the individual has always been something I prioritized, and nowhere does one's right to liberty become more threatened than in criminal litigation. I have strong views about the role of the state in our society, as I believe that we are generally better off with less government intrusion into our personal lives, especially with regards to its use of the criminal law.The heavy law-and-order prosecutorial policies of past generations have failed us, especially when it comes to the most marginalized populations among us. I hope that with my advocacy I can contribute to a more just and equal world for all those who come before the criminal law. As with all my business endeavours, my clients' interests will always come first and foremost.
I am seeking donations to help with the startup costs of my new law practice. The current job market for new lawyers is tough, especially with many of us graduating with large amounts of student loans debt - me included. If you're in a position to help out a little, your assistance will go primarily towards helping with my living costs as I start up my practice, marketing costs, LSO/LAWPRO fees (very hefty), office space, and administrative costs.
I would like to thank everyone in my communities who has taken the time to wish me well, to offer friendship and mentorship, and especially those who have accepted me for who I am.
All donors who donate over $30 will be eligible to receive a free legal consultation in the area of criminal law once I have my practice set up and running.
