Help My Mom Get a New Wheelchair for Her Birthday!

From Brendan Apuan

I'm trying to get my mom a special surprise for her birthday next week! The wheelchair she is using is very beat up, so I want to get her a good new one for her birthday. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

When she was four years old, my mom was a victim of polio. It affected her legs, leaving her wheelchair-bound ever since.

We stay in a part of the Philippines which generally isn't very friendly towards wheelchair users. A lot of roads cause great wear and tear to wheelchairs causing them to break sooner than they should. Few places are readily accessible to people in wheelchairs, and even fewer places have available handicap restrooms. Because of this, I have to care for my mom full time. With my main source of income being freelance work, it isn't easy for me to save up especially as of late, with recent car troubles.

Next week, my mom will be celebrating her birthday, and with everything she has done for me I feel she deserves a new wheelchair. The wheelchair she uses currently is fairly beat up and everything is taped together to prevent pieces from coming apart and causing her discomfort.

As I mentioned, a huge problem we often have is finding a wheelchair-friendly bathroom. I have found something which may be helpful in this regard. This wheelchair has an extended back for extra comfort, which reclines so the user can comfortably stretch their back after sitting all day. The best part is that it comes with a built-in commode so finding an accessible bathroom becomes much less of a problem! In many ways, this wheelchair would be a huge help for my mom.

Unfortunately, I do not have the money to purchase it for her, and with her birthday in one week (August 25), I don't see it likely that I'll be able to make 9100 PHP (approximately 180 USD)  in time, so I've come to ask for help. My mom is a very generous person. She is generous with her time, her talent, and support. as well as being very generous with food and financial needs. She makes it a point to serve at church every day for no charge, sometimes even multiple times in one day!

With all the good she does unconditionally, I feel that she deserves some good in return, and together, we can make my mom's birthday an extra special one with a brand new wheelchair.
