About a year ago, my mom broke her back in an automobile accident. She’s never been the same. By this time my mom was already retired and my dad was already struggling to pay for our home. Since the accident, strain with medical bills and our home have caused my dad to be depressed. He eventually asked my oldest brother for help and because he’s a good son, he did. My brother now has helped a significant amount and has yet and will likely not see that money he worked for ever again. It’s not my Dads fault. He was left with no choice. But my brother is also now expecting a kid and I can tell my brother isn’t happy with my dad. I want to be able to help fix their relationship because now it’s strained. My mom on the other hand, has been battling severe pain with a broken back and mental health issues. Since her automobile accident, her father(my grandpa) passed away, her best friend(people she was housekeeper for) passed away, and her brother(my uncle) committed suicide. This left her devastated. We've Spent moments together building strengths in our faith during this time of loss. Which hopefully I’ve been some emotional support as her youngest son. However, I can see it in her eyes everyday that she wishes she could do more and it breaks my heart. The other day she mentioned her brother and wanted to be able to help his kids who are currently struggling since their dad took his own life. To note, we live in Temecula, CA and all of my moms family is in Mexico. All she wants is to be able to give to her own family but with our financial struggle with our home, the totaled car which had to be replaced and paying her medical bills, it’s very difficult. All I want is to help them. I want my mom to help her family so she can be happy and i want to help my Dad and Brother who have sacrificed so much for my family. In the future, I hope to make my brother, my mom, and my dad happy again. And hope that I can become the uncle I want to be when that baby comes. Lastly, a little about me. My name is Orlando Meza. I recently finished school at SDSU where I studied Psychology. I was also a student-athlete who played for the baseball team as one of their pitchers. I got into the school through a baseball scholarship. However, after a year, my scholarship was significantly reduced which left me to take out student loans. Unfortunately, both my dad and my brother are co-signed. This worries me because of obvious reasons. But my student debt is something I also want to take care of so they don’t ever have to worry about me. I am the first in my family to graduate.
