Help us save Punto Crea in Guatemala

Help us save Punto Crea in Guatemala

From Felix Alvarado

Punto Crea are STEAM maker spaces for youth in rural Guatemala. We now have 10 locations. But just as things are taking off and scaling up, anti-immigration policy has led to our funding being cancelled!

Punto Crea started as a challenge in 2017: what would it take to set up «Makerspaces» in rural Guatemala?

Vitruvian Consulting, LLC, Universidad Galileo and Asociación Mundo Posible established a partnership to do this. With USAID funding under the Puentes Project we designed and implemented a non-formal education model that includes an online and offline portfolio of learning challenges and complementary education resources, recruiting volunteer tutors in the communities, setting up a workshop/lab with high-tech and low tech tools and resources, providing training and support to the volunteer tutors, skills certification using open badges, and mobilizing support through a  community committee.

We got off to a flying start, and now have Puntos Crea in 10 communities in the Guatemalan Western Highlands. But just as things got interesting and we were planning to scale up, disaster struck! Anti-immigration policy by the US executive led to stopping funding for USAID, and the lead contractor over us chose to cut our funds as of October 2019.

We will have to let our field team go and their experience will all be lost. This is directly counterproductive to the goal of reducing irregular migration to the US: people will lose jobs in Guatemala, and some of the poorest youth will lose hard-earned trust in national and international organizations that tell them they should stay in the country when the promised opportunities are withdrawn.

My colleagues and I need your help in funding the field team for the next 6 months while we find ways to move forward, but do consider contributing on a regular basis. Please join me in giving through Online Learning Initiative to this campaign and help save Punto Crea. And please share this page with your family, friends and colleagues.

Thanks,

Felix Alvarado
