Look My Way :)

Look My Way :)

From Shekinah Bass

I am completing my first 2yrs of med. school in Poland. The money will help me pay this year's tuition and get me to Poland. No Hat, Stole, Cap?... A mom wanted to walk and didn't have her attire so I gave her mine :)!

Update #2

As first day of classes is soon approaching (October 1st), I have yet another hurdle to "hop". However, I am optimistic with the help of generous people, I will be able to overcome this financial obstacle. I am asking for enough funds to get me started as I am taking out loans and have plans to work and finish paying for my educational costs. With great humility and gratefulness, whether you are able to contribute monetarily or with kind words, I just want to say thank you for simply looking my way.

More Info

I decided to attend The Medical University of Lublin (MUL) in Poland. Attending MUL will grant me the opportunity to learn eastern medicine and western medicine. I feel this will better equip me to care for people of various diverse backgrounds and give me the opportunity to be licensed and practice medicine in Europe and in the USA, once I finish my degree.

College Career:

As a first-generation college student, I began my college experience out of state with confidence and verve, readied for the new challenges and eager to learn. However, my morale soon depleted as I became ill. After many doctor’s visits, I received the startling diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), but I was determined to prevail over this new adversity by making an abrupt lifestyle change. I permanently adapted a plant-based diet, increased exercise, and limited my sun exposure. My health improved over the next six months; I gained weight, experienced less muscle pain, and was able to attend school consistently. Confronting this hurdle made me realize I am goal-oriented and determined. I learned that with tenacious will power, I could manage my time efficiently and that my aspirations were grander than any obstacle.

Aspirations:

During my time at WSSU, I volunteered weekly at my local hospital in the Emergency Room, Cancer Center, and Intensive Care Unit. While volunteering, I had time to observe physicians and think about how I would like to give back after completing my studies. My goal would be to help provide good healthcare to people where it is not readily available or affordable. Growing up and into my adulthood, hard choices had to be made between paying for school and my bills, or my medication and doctor visits. I don't think anyone should have to make those choices. Once I complete my education, I would love nothing more than to start my own nonprofit clinics, near underrepresented populations where quality healthcare is not easily accessible. I want to spend my life’s work researching new chemical phenomena to progress the field of medicine and, use my life experiences and passion for science to mentor, teach, and encourage students from disadvantaged backgrounds, to pursue medicine, stem related fields, and their dreams.
