Hello, my name is Pati (Patricia) Graves and I am using this platform of as my last resort to help pay for my first two semesters of Grad school in order to get my Masters degree in Marriage/family Therapy.

I am in the Marriage/family therapy program because I want to become a child therapist. I think it is such an important role, especially in society today, where children and youth do not receive the containment and guidance they need to grow. Their voices should be heard, but instead they are silenced. They face so many struggles, without the stressors of bullying, peer pressure, conflict at home, and the trauma of abuse. With this being a passion of mine, I need the proper training to better assist children and youth with the problems and situations that they face. I am committed to learning all that my role will ask of me.

My professional goals are to counsel children and youth who have been abused: who are stressed, bullied, struggle with gender or sexual identification, behavioral or mental health problems, peer pressure, and cultural identification. I want to counsel them in ways that make sense to them, whether it is talk therapy, play therapy, or expressive arts therapy. I want to help instill self-empowerment and confidence in their decision making and in their own intuition. I believe in promoting and nurturing resiliency in children and youth.

My introduction to helping others came from my mother. I was taught to volunteer at a young age, first through my church by assisting the elderly with meals and socializing with them at functions. I also brought developmentally disabled adults to church and sat with them during Mass. My mom, an avid bowler, created a bowling team for developmentally disabled adults. I assisted her with everything from writing the weekly newsletter to bowling with the league.

After I injured my back and could not work, I started volunteering for an organization called generation FIVE in San Francisco and Oakland. I worked with them for almost 12 years. The organization’s goal is to end child sexual abuse within five generations through social justice. I participated in multiple training's with generation FIVE, two of them yearlong, learning how to end child sexual abuse as a community organizer. I helped with many of their training's in several capacities and co-authored a positive sexuality Zine for youth. These real-life experiences with generation FIVE helped me understand how child therapy fits into the bigger picture of child welfare.

In September of 2018, I began training with Bay Area Woman Against Rape (BAWAR) to become a California Certified Rape Crisis Counselor. I graduated in December in 2018 and have steadily volunteered with BAWAR. Since then, I am now a paid back up advocate with BAWAR. My job duties include crisis intervention on the phone as well as coordinating and attending in-person accompaniments at police interviews and forensic exams through their county Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). I also have helped out with training other rape crisis counselors.

Due to some paperwork, my student loans were put into default. I have been in communication with the Dept. of Education since January and they have now told me that they could forgive my student debt but it would take three years. In that time I could not ask for more help for Grad school, so they suggested that I wait three years to go to Grad school. I simply cannot do that. After talking to the University, I cannot apply for scholarships either. While my account is now moving to rehabilitation (as I make payments for the next 9 months to get it back in good standing) the first two semesters I have to pay out of pocket. I just don't have this money. Which, again, is why I am here.

The first installment that I need to make for the fall semester is due by July 13, 2020.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this, for donating even a dollar, and if this moves you please feel free to share this. This has been a dream of mine and something that I am confident in knowing that I will be successful in.

So, thank you again. Be safe, well and kind.
