We met our original goal, and this show of collective community support is overwhelming to say the least.
Because this platform takes a % of your donations we have increased our original goal of $20,000 and are hoping to reach $25,000 to cover our expenses.
We are truly humbled by your grace, your giving, your work, thoughts and prayers. Your donations will contribute to an effective defense that will help to right a wrong that happens all too often in this city as well as this country. It is the lack of proper resources and education that give life to inequalities that impact us all. No matter your walk in life. We will continue to pursue justice and equality for as long as our days allow. Not just for our family but others also. Incarceration is often a touchy subject in our communities but our silence allows it to form a life of its own. We can stand together to make the changes we need.
Thank you again, by alleviating my financial burden, you’re allowing me to continue fighting for our communities.
Beloved community organizer Martha Williams has been fighting to free her son Damir since 2017, and she needs our help to pay for his appeal and clear his name. She needs to raise 20,000$ to pay for a medical examiner, and legal experts to support Damir’s innocence claim and have his life sentence reversed.
In September of 2017, Martha’s 21-year-old son Damir was arrested for a crime he didn’t commit. The first time, the charges were dropped but when the DA’s office refiled the charges in 2018, Damir was convicted of homicide and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. At the time, his family was overwhelmed and couldn’t afford the price tag of a private lawyer, and Damir was represented by a court appointed lawyer.
Now, he has a chance to clear his name through the appeal process, with a dedicated legal team who will fight for his freedom. They are hiring legal experts to support their defense, which each cost ~10,000.
Throughout this entire process, Martha has done everything she can: she rallied family and friends during the trial and started engaging in the Participatory Defense Hubs to get support in fighting the case. In the last few years, on top of fighting for her son’s innocence, Martha has poured her heart and soul into supporting family members of people caught in the legal system.
If you’ve been involved in any criminal justice issue in the city, you’ve met Martha: she’s a member of the #NO215 Jail coalition, a core member of the Coalition to Abolish Death by Incarceration, a member of the North Philly, Best Outcomes, YASP and West Philly hubs, an official Prison Society visitor, a member of the Center for Carceral Communities, and the Chair of Fight for Lifers. You’ve heard her speak at rallies and she probably co-facilitated a meeting you were part of. She has been doing all of this, while also supporting her son emotionally and financially during his incarceration and spending countless hours planning and coordinating for his legal cases.
During the day, Martha is a carpenter, and of course her work extend way beyond the manual labor required of her. She listens, she cries with people, she supports them. This is the Martha that her community knows and loves: a freedom fighter, a big-hearted and fun-loving grandmother, mother, neighbor, and friend.
This is our time, as a community to step up for Martha the way she has stepped up over and over to fight for our collective freedom. Let’s show her that she can count on us to support her during this really difficult time, and that together we’ll ensure that Damir comes home. She has already paid the lawyer and supports her son while his incarcerated. She needs us to raise $20,000 to pay for legal and investigative costs to support Damir's innocence claim and have his life sentence reversed.
