Help keep me off the streets

Help keep me off the streets

From Cadence Yungwirth

After saying I didn't do anything wrong, the Wisconsin Unemployment department demanded I pay back the $15,000 they paid me last year because of a technicality. That and my unemployed status means I can't afford rent.

Update #1

Stayed off the computer all day yesterday so I could focus on organizing and packing as well as meeting up with three friends I haven't seen in over a year and a half. Was completely awestruck when I logged in here and saw that I'm almost a quarter of the way to my goal!!

Love you all so much! I am humbled by your generosity.

Spoke with my son and his wife and it looks like I'll be staying in their spare room, hoping that my two cats get along with their dog and cat. So good news on that front as I'll have a place to set up my computer and continue my job hunt without having to deal with public computers.

Still a bit stressed about getting everything done by the end of the month but I've done more with less time so I know it'll get done, especially with the relief in my mind that I'll have a place to go to.

Will be attempting another call to the unemployment office today to see if I can get somebody who knows what's what and from a comment from one of my friends last night, I'm going to be writing to my state representative and state senator to see if either one can give me a hand on this issue. We shall see.

Again, thank you all so very much. Y'all have my undying gratitude.

More Info

In December 2019 I received my master's degree in library and information science with an archives concentration. Full of hope, I started applying to every job opening I even remotely qualified for. I had a couple thousand dollars left over from my student loans, which would be more than enough to get me through as I'm pretty frugal and I'll have no trouble getting a job.

Then Covid hit.

Needless to say, the job opportunities evaporated. I started to worry about my finances. Tried working delivery with GrubHub and DoorDash, but so did everyone else and I barely made enough to pay for my gas as my anxiety ramped up every day as the infection numbers started to escalate. Thankfully the government came up with the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, which was perfect for me. After several months of waiting and praying, I qualified, which was such a huge relief. I literally felt a weight life off of me when I read the notification. I was going to be able to stay in my apartment and survive!!

That brings us to this year. Unexpectedly I got a notification that the Wisconsin unemployment department suddenly decided that apparently I was mistakenly put on the program, that I didn't really qualify for it, and that I had to pay back the nearly $15,000 they paid me the previous year. Um, what? Called them (and actually got through) and they said that it wasn't due to anything I did, it was because of a technicality that unfortunately wasn't caught until now. Oops, sorry. Pay us back!!!

So, even though right now my only job is 13 hours a week, I'm expected to not only pay my living expenses and debts and just pay back the government $15,000. Yeah, that's not happening. As it is, even though things are opening up and I've been able to send out at least 30 job applications in the past few weeks, I'm in the process of packing up all my belongings and moving out of my apartment. To where? I have no blessed idea. All I do know is that my stuff is going in a $100 a month storage unit and I'm going to probably live rough for a while. At least I have a tent, air mattress, and sleeping bag.

Oh, you may be asking why I'm asking for an extra thousand dollars - I recently broke a molar. And having no dental insurance means it's not getting fixed anytime soon because Mama just can't afford that on top of everything else.

Anyway, I'm going to end my babbling here before my pride defeats my slightly dissociative state of mine and tells me to delete this campaign. If you can help, thank you so very much!! If you can't, I completely understand but sharing this with others would be a big help.

Mama loves you!

See you at the gaming table!
