Help Juan fight to get his life back

Help Juan fight to get his life back

From Denise Backowies

Sept 4, after a dirt biking accident, he was transported by ambulance to LUH. His injury needed a level 1 neuro trauma center so they had to transport him by flight for life to St Anthony’s. He’s recovering from a TBI

So today has been AMAZING!! To start, Kirk and I both got to stay home with the other kids last night which was such a needed time for them as well as us. We enjoyed the beauty and peacefulness of our new home, ate dinner together and got a good nights sleep.

When I got to the hospital just before lunchtime, the nurses let me know Juan was able to shower and had already had a physical therapy session. According to him, he isn't a cave man so of course he took a shower, what is wrong with me!? 😂 He had walked around the whole 5th floor with very minimal help. He also ate ALL of his breakfast!

After about an hour, PT came in again and had a scavenger hunt all planned out for him. He walked half the floor this time and was exhausted by the time he got back to his room. He still isn’t able to East fully normal foods yet so I had a his lunch, ground cheeseburger and Mac and cheese waiting for him when he got back. He literally scarfed it down with a root beer in like 2 minutes and was so exhausted he fell asleep for several hours now afterwards.

We are waiting to hear about him getting into an inpatient program at Children’s, but are in the final approval stages so he could be transferred as early as tomorrow! He is doing so great considering what has happened and I can’t wait to see his progress once he is in a specialized TBI rehab facility like Children’s. Thanks for all the prayers❤️❤️

More Info

On his 18th birthday and just 7 days after moving into our dream acreage on the farm, Juan sustained a devastating traumatic brain injury while dirt biking. He was first taken to Longmont United Hospital where we quickly found out they did not offer the extensive level of trauma help that he needed so they transported him by flight for life to Saint Anthony’s Central in Lakewood.

He was on a ventilator, had a bolt in his skull to monitor pressure, was given numerous rescue meds, had 5 IV’s at one point including a central IV that was placed right outside his heart.

At this point, it has been 8 days and he is in recovery still at Saint Anthony’s. He just came out of ICU late last night and is on what they call the main floor. He will be ready to be released for inpatient care at a rehab facility sometime next week from what we are being told. His continued care will most likely last for years with the first hurdle being getting him well enough to get out of inpatient.

We have a very long road ahead of us in getting Juan his life back thru rehabilitation, but feel very lucky that there is even a road at this point. Neither Kirk or I have been working, as being here to facilitate these first few days off the ventilator to let him know he’s not alone, have been a huge priority. We do have 4 other kiddos that we are also trying to give some balance to now that Juan is medically stable. Once he is in an in-patient rehab facility, we will be able to get some of the normalcy back for everyone.

We hugely appreciate anything you can do to help Juan get thru this and hopefully get back to living the life he has always dreamed of that he only got for a short 7 days. If you aren’t able to help financially, prayers and good thoughts are also what we need right now! ❤️
