Help Irene Walk Again

Help Irene Walk Again

From William Wong

Irene suffered a spinal cord injury in a severe car accident earlier this year that robbed her of sensation and movement from her chest down. Please donate and help fund her rehab so she can get back on her feet!

Update #3

Talk about Happy Tuesday. We're $41K+ on our Fundly as of morning today, which is amazing! We've had a productive last week, what with Irene being upgraded from a walker to crutches for her robotics walking. We've also received and been able to pay off more essential rehab equipment, like this EMPI stim unit that will help keep Irene's ab and leg muscles in shape, to augment her stim bike workout regimen. Other good news? Your donations are helping us get those pesky medical bills paid off and out of the way!

More Info

On Jan. 3, while on a trip to upstate New York, my girlfriend, Irene, and I were involved in a serious accident when our SUV slipped on ice and collided with a tree. Irene was sleeping lying across the backseat of the car, only waking up when the vehicle started to swerve across the highway. After the car came to a stop, Irene reported that she was feeling excruciating pain in her upper back and could no longer move her legs.

Irene was taken immediately to Westchester Medical Center, where we were informed that she had suffered burst fractures to her T3 and T4 vertebrae, with her spinal cord damaged to the extent that she could no longer feel nor move her body from the chest down. This was devastating news to both of us as she is only 30 years old. She stayed at the hospital for two weeks, receiving surgery for the hematoma and the fractures, then received intensive inpatient physical therapy for seven weeks at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, learning how to work and function with her new body.

Irene's now back home and working hard in her outpatient therapy as well as participating in whatever research opportunities are open to her for aiding with her recovery. That said, she is still dealing with the difficulties of impaired sensation and movement.

While we and our doctors have no way of knowing what functionality Irene will be able to recover, we're staying hopeful, despite the odds, that Irene will walk again. Irene has her bad days, but we're still working hard to help Irene get back on her feet.

That brings us to my reason for fundraising. While insurance is covering some of the services and equipment Irene needs for rehab and independent living, there are still substantial out-of-pocket costs that we are facing. Currently we need to fund:

  • Leg braces and walker to help Irene practice walking at home, which in turn helps maintain bone density in her legs ($500+)
  • Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) bike that allows Irene to get the cardiovascular exercise she needs and also rebuild her leg muscles ($23,000)
  • Therapy mat and platform for Irene to do stretching and balance exercises on (around $700)
  • Home reconstruction work to help Irene move and function around the house, including a stair lift, wheelchair accessible furniture and home appliances, and a bigger bathroom
  • Outpatient rehab ($50 per session; Irene attends 2 sessions per week)
  • Ongoing pharmaceutical and medical supply needs (around $100 per month)

We're commencing this campaign with the objective of $50,000 but hope that with your help we can reach even higher goals. Please know we're grateful for any assistance you can provide, as even the smallest donation will go a long way toward supporting Irene's recovery in this challenging time. Thank you so much!

Update #2

Happy Monday everyone,
Thanks to all your generous donations, we've hit 75% of our fundraising goal! We honestly couldn't imagine even reaching even the 50% mark at the start of our campaign, so thank you and thank you again for your support.
We also wanted to let you know that we've finally paid off Irene's stim bike! Here's a picture of her in our apartment, happily biking away.

We're eager to show off Irene's progress in person, so if you're ever in the NYC area, please be sure to look us up!

Update #1

Hello Friends!
Irene and I have been blown away by the response that we've received. We are truly touched by all your kind words and all the amazing support you all have given. We can't thank you all enough for what you are doing for us. Here's a video of Irene participating in robotics research yesterday! She's currently participating in research to observe how robotic exoskeletons can help SCI victims improve their quality of life and even walk again.
