Gretta was found as a stray and was attacked when she was 1 month old - this caused her entire jaw to dislocate preventing her from being able to eat properly and open her mouth more than an inch. We want to fix her jaw!
Gretta is out of the hospital today - she's on painkillers and antibiotics to help her jaw heal. She is crying a lot :( and looks skinnier - but has to get used to her jaw being able to move.. The path to her road of recovery...!
Due to Gretta's unique case, we were given two specialized veterinarian recommendations to preform jaw surgery. Gretta's jaw had been dislocated and pushed back into her skull. At such a young age, for her to have to suffer through daily pain including not being able to eat properly which is causing her to be underweight, not being able to open her jaw more than an inch and a lack of energy, we want to do whatever we can do help Gretta have a normal life. The daily stress of what Gretta has experienced has caused an abscess to grow on her face and her teeth to start rotting.
The first pup we rescued was from the Humane Society at the beginning of 2018. She was supposed to be our only pup and we weren't planning on rescuing another pup but ended up rescuing Gretta in late October 2018 when Gretta was 4 months old. We were told by the rescue that she had unknown history except for the fact she was attacked. The story was that a woman had found her as a stray covered in blood and took her in to try and save her life - she was badly injured and barely breathing - she was transferred into the rescue, Paws For Love. The rescue is run by an amazing woman doing wonderful things for dogs to be able to live their lives full of love and find the perfect family. We drove to Thunder Bay to visit her and gave it 4 weeks to see if she would be able to be adopted by another family due to her history. We checked in regularly for updates but no one was interested in her and no one came to adopt/rescue her.. When we rescued the first pup, we wanted to ensure she would have an amazing life - after knowing Gretta wasn't being adopted - we made the decision to adopt her. She couldn't be left in the unknown. She deserves to grow and live a normal, fulfilled life.
We cannot have Gretta suffering on a daily basis. We need to be able to get her the surgery that she needs to fix her jaw and allow her a good quality of life. All funds raised as part of this campaign will go towards Gretta's surgery - we have spent over $2500 so far (X-Rays, CT Scan, Veterinary Consultations & Visits) and now with the surgery range of $3500-$4500, additional help is needed to help us help Gretta. All contributions made will provide Gretta with the ability to grow into a beautiful adult dog who will be living a full life; able to eat, play, move her jaw and have the pure joy of what every dog should experience.
UPDATE - Gretta is now out of surgery ( as she had to be admitted today as an emergency) and the doctor has advised they have removed the abscess completely; they've traced the abscess to a dead bone which has been cut out. They've removed the back of her left jaw bone as it had been moulded incorrectly. She is currently in ICU starting her recovery. We will continue to get updates and post them accordingly. Thanks for your help and support!
