Help get a laptop for Afghanistan's only female guide

From Megan Jerrard

Fatima is Afghanistan's only female guide, now a refugee in Italy. We want to buy her a laptop so she can get remote work and earn an income to support herself, go to school and start a new life.

There are no words to describe the situation in Afghanistan and we all must do what we can to help.

Like us, I am sure you have been watching the events unfold with horror. As the Taliban retake control of the country along go all of women's already precarious rights.

But there is one woman in particular who had been trying to make a difference in women's lives by being the first female tour guide, and for that, Fatima was in extreme danger. She is now a refugee in Italy, and we want to buy her a laptop and other essential items for setting up in a new country, so she can get remote work and earn an income to support herself, go to school and start a new life.

Recognized by CNN

Fatima was celebrated earlier in the year on CNN in this story as a pioneer and role model for women in a country where women have long been kept away from the public eye.

At only 22 years old, she realised that by being the first female tour guide, she was a role model to many other women who would now consider the work of a guide as an acceptable female job.

She is a college student and was teaching girls in Afghanistan that they could be anything they wanted, and encouraging them to become guides. She was the first female guide, but did not want to be the last.

Sadly, all that is now gone and instead is a campaign from the Taliban to remove women from all jobs and industries. As an active women's rights campaigner and public figure, Fatima was evacuated as she was in great danger of being killed.

She is now in Italy as a refugee, and has nothing but the clothes on her back. We believe that buying her a laptop and other essentials for setting up a new life is the most sustainable way to help her, to set her up with the opportunities to earn an income through remote work, to attend school and further her education, so she can continue her advocacy for womens rights.

Any donation, and anything you can spare, will be passed directly onto Fatima, so she can start her new life. We are in direct contact with Fatima through Solo Female Travelers Club, and have been speaking to her regularly since she has landed in Italy.
