As many of you may know, I recently started working as a school counselor. I am very excited to see where this journey takes me, but have also run into some barriers.
Even though I already have my Masters degree in counseling, the school district I work for is requiring me to go back to school to gain a post grad certificate in "school counseling" (*even though I have already been deemed fully qualified*). The program I enter could take about 1.5 to 2 years to complete. I am still trying to find the best program for me, but have budgeted that 6 - 8 credits (between now and June) is going to be about $5000.
Unfortunately, the school district I work for has also let me know that I am 100 % responsible for paying for whichever program I enter into. The real kicker is, that in order to stay employed I must enter a program very quickly (within the next couple of months).
I also will be paying for my own professional counseling supervision as it is not provided at my job. As someone who is an unlicensed therapist, I must participate in weekly individual and group supervision to gain hours to become a licensed therapist. I have budgeted that, that is going to cost me about $120 each week or $480 - $600 a month or between $4,500 and $5,500 for the school year (depending on length of week/ month/ time off for holiday breaks).
I am also preparing to take the National Counseling Exam in the next few months which costs $275.
In total, I'm looking at having to allocate a little over $10,000 towards professional development in the next 9 months. Which to me, is absolutely ridiculous; I can't do this alone.
To accomplish this feat by myself I would also need to work after school hours and weekends. In order to mitigate stress, I am asking for my community's help.
I am not asking for the full $10,000 just a portion to help! Even if I only raise $1,000 I will be so grateful.
If you are able please give or share! Please let me know if you know anyone who offers group supervision at a low, sliding scale rate or a supervising therapist who would be willing to gift that to me.
