I am raising money for my Malawian friend Diana, who had to travel to South Africa to find work so she could support her children. Due to COVID-19 she has become stuck in South Africa, far away from her children.
I was in Malawi over four years ago and had the pleasure of meeting Diana on a bus trip. Myself being alone, tired, a little nervous and no idea where I was going, Diana looked after me and took me into her house, fed me, and let me sleep there, introducing me to her family and friends. This was a kindness I will always remember, as she did not have much - she shared a bed with her two children, and so set me up a separate mattress. We ate delicious home cooked curry on the floor of her living room.
We stayed in touch and she even came to visit me in another city whilst I was working in Malawi, and I stayed with her a couple times too. Her two girls were so inspiring - the eldest, Sauda, had a quiet confidence about her, and the youngest, Sajida, had bright, clever eyes and a lot of awareness about the world, already at such a young age.
Soon after I left Malawi, Diana was struggling to support her family. She took a job in South Africa and left her girls in the care of other family members, to try to earn more money to give them a good life. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has meant she no longer has work, or any funds to return to her girls. They ask her all the time when she is coming home. She has not seen either of them for several years, nor her other children.
All it would take to get her back to her family in Malawi is 250GBP - please give what you can so they can be reunited after so long.
