From Cairah's mom:
We knew we were expecting last year but we didn’t know having our first baby would be this hard. We found out at 18 weeks that our little one had an abnormality called Gastroschisis. This birth defect caused her abdominal organs to form on the exterior of her body. Our hearts immediately sunk not knowing what was to come but the harder part was right after she was born and sent straight to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Cairah spent almost 3 months in the NICU. Feeding tubes, IV’s in hands, feet, head, arms, everywhere they could get access to a vein she had an IV. The first surgery followed her birth of trying to get her intestines back inside of her body. The next few surgeries were opening her abdomen back up to remove scar tissue, place a central line for essential fluids and the placement of a G-tube which was an alternative feeding method. Recovery seemed faster after these surgeries but even after our discharge from the NICU she had other complications that led us back to the hospital a few times for being re-admitted. I remember thinking right before Christmas if our baby would always depend on medical equipment and how much longer she would be in pain. February 2018 approached and the doctors finally removed all medical equipment and we haven’t been to the hospital since. Cairah has been doing really well but she now faces a mild heart condition that the doctors are trying to figure out and will undergo more testing. She is such a blessing and a strong little girl. I thank god for her every day and we know that she is a miracle
