Update #2

He comes home TODAY! After a very long and tiresome 12 days at the hospital, Michelle and one of his best friends, Walt, will be bring him home this afternoon. We want to thank everyone again for their continued support and donations. It’s going to be such a huge help to get them through this. We should have all of the equipment necessary to keep him comfortable, safe, and help him heal appropriately. Once he is all situated at home, we will let everyone know when they are up for visitors.

Love,

Aja

More Info

On Thursday, June 10th, 2021, around 11:15 AM, my father-in-law Brent Phelps was involved in a serious motorcycle accident approximately 30 miles south of Alturas, CA while traveling to Reno, NV with his wife and motorcycle club, the Rip City Riders. While riding, a deer jumped into the front of his bike, hitting him in the head and neck, and knocking him unconscious. He then veered across the oncoming lane and crashed on the other side. He was taken by an emergency helicopter to Mercy Medical Hospital in Redding, CA, where he is currently being treated. Brent sustained a broken neck, broken jaw, broken left leg and injured left hand. While his neck injury does not immediately require surgery, he had a procedure to repair his broken jaw and will need surgery to repair torn ligaments and broken bones in his left lower leg. He will also be required to wear a neck brace 24/7 for 3 months, which will prevent him from working and cause a significant strain on his and his wife, Michelle’s, finances. On top of the medical bills that will be accruing, Michelle will be driving to and from Redding several times a month until he has completed all necessary treatments. Since COVID restrictions prevent anyone other than the patient from sleeping in the hospital room, she will also have no choice but to stay in nearby hotels.

While these types of accidents are horrible when happening to anyone, my father-in-law couldn’t have been any less deserving of such terrible circumstances. He is a wonderful husband, son, father, grandfather, and friend. He adores his children and grandchildren, and always ensures they have everything they need. He and my mother-in-law have been members of the non-profit organization, Rip City Riders, for over a decade, in which Brent has been the president for several of those years. Although riding motorcycles is the primary purpose of the group, the members also spend a substantial amount of time raising money and volunteering for local charities and organizations such as Citizens for Safe Schools, Klamath/Lake County Food Bank, Toys for Tots, Coats for Kids, Assistance League, S.M.A.R.T, and CASA.

Brent and Michelle never ask for help, in fact, they will probably kill me for setting this up, but I don’t care. They have helped so many people out since I have known them, it is time that the favor is returned to them. While it may be a long road to recovery, I would love to make the journey as easy on them as possible.

If you can afford to donate, it would be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to donate but would like to help, please share the link to friends and family who you think may want to help.

I will post updates of his condition as we receive them.

Thank you so much,

Aja Phelps

Update #1

Brent had surgery on his leg today and things went even better than expected! There wasn't as much damage to the ligaments and tendons as initially expected and the fractures were repaired without complications. Michelle was with him all day and said that he was in high spirits. If everything goes as planned, he should be released from the hospital on Tuesday to come back home! He still has one more surgery, in about 5 weeks, to remove the hardware from his first jaw surgery. Chad and I are hoping to be able to get to see him tomorrow before heading back home with Michelle. Thanks again to everyone for the continued support and donations.
