Hi. My name is Logan, and Bill McKay is my stepfather.

He was in a terrible car accident recently, and both the insurance company and the hospital have denied him the inpatient rehab he needs to recover.

I could try to summarize the situation myself, but my mother wrote this which I think is the best way to convey what's going on:

"So many of you have sent such kind messages of support, and have lifted us up in prayers. I haven't been able to respond to them all but please know that we feel every one. We still need them because we are not getting the care and help we need in this fight from the hospital or the insurance company.

Bill has received basically no physical therapy while in the hospital, so all of the progress he has made is because I have pushed him, worked with him in the bed, helped him get out of bed and done everything I can to help him get stronger and take care of himself. Don't get me wrong- the nurses and techs have been great and they are definitely in it with us. But it is apparent that the medical team wrote him off early in the hospitalization and that has translated into the insurance company denying him rehabilitation services.

(EDIT: The trauma team came in today and they are very much in support of his going to rehab. The provider who did the peer to peer fought hard for him. In my frustration I implied that it was not a valiant effort on her part and that is not accurate.)

Although the medical team has been shocked to see how much he has progressed without them and one of the attending physicians did concede to a "peer to peer" appeal of the denial, it was still upheld.

I wrote a letter of appeal to the insurance company as we have been repeatedly denied the opportunity for a conversation with anyone making the decision, and it, too was denied. We are looking at options to pay out of pocket for inpatient rehab, but that will likely be $20-$25 K.

The solution we continue to hear is "You need a Plan B" which means a nursing home or bringing him home. Neither of those options will provide him with the intensive physical and occupational therapy he needs to be able to walk again. Under no circumstances will he go to a nursing home, so I will need to take a leave of absence from work to take care of him as he recovers.

I have filed complaints with the state insurance commissioner and the Department of Health and Human Services, but those responses are not likely to come before he is forced to leave the hospital this week. We still believe in miracles, so please pray for one on our behalf.

Regardless of the outcome, seeing my husband sitting up in a chair feeding himself some sort of hospital mystery meat is my best Christmas blessing."

My mother and my stepdad have been there for me my entire life, and now it's my turn to do whatever I can to help them. I believe that with your help, we can raise $30,000 which would cover the cost of inpatient rehab as well as any additional fees.

Even if you can't donate, sharing this page would go such a long way in raising awareness about this. Every little bit helps and I appreciate anything you can do to help our family get through this.
