My best friend, Victoria, has fled the Bahamas due to hurricane Dorian. She now lives with me and I am raising funds to help her through the immigration process and help support her for the next few months.
After 3 weeks of phone calls and voicemails, Victoria's interview with border patrol was FINALLY moved from Toronto to Vancouver! We were able to get cheap roundtrip flights for $341 total -- not too bad! However, we still need to consider accommodation and food.
I'm currently on medical leave until the end of the year and will be on short-term disability, but I don't know when I will receive payments so for now, I'm managing what's left from my last paycheque and it's getting smaller every day.
So please, if you can support in any way whether it's donating or sharing, we would both be grateful.
She has winter clothes!!
My friend Tiffany took Victoria shopping for some much-needed winter clothing and we were able to scrounge up a nice winter coat at valu village for under $10! Now, I believe Victoria will be set for the winter. Another friend, Jon, also helped provide Victoria with the air mattress and a cozy space heater that she has been using diligently since the weather has dropped below zero overnight.
Big thanks to those two for their generosity! But we still have quite a few hurdles to accomplish. For the past 3 weeks now, I have been trying to move Victoria's initial interview to Vancouver, but everyone I have called (including the IRB, IRCC, and the immigration office here in Edmonton), all tell me they can't do anything. As of now, I'm waiting for a call from the superintendent of Terminal 3 at the Toronto Airport and unfortunately, prices for flights have jumped to $433/person.
Victoria still needs a lot of funds to help and now, I will be on short-term disability for the next few months, meaning I won't be making as much money as before.
Please keep spreading the word and encouraging your friends and family to help if they can. Thank you, everyone!
