Update #13

We have a confirmed surgery of June 17th for Helen! A new kidney from her amazing brother Dominic, and we have cleared all the final hurdles and are a go for surgery. The only thing we remain very close watching is her blood count level. An EPO shot has helped to raise it, but if they cannot keep it raised till the surgery, a transfusion may be necessary.

Thank you all for the love and prayers, Helen is hanging in there, but it has been very tough physically, emotionally, and mentally lately.

We are starting a novena today for her and Dominic's surgery on the 17th, to the Patron Saint of Kidneys, St Marina (Margaret) of Antioch if you would like to join!

Helen's sister and mother have been an amazing and loving help lately out here, so please keep them in your prayers as well!

The happiest girl we know is in need of a 2nd kidney transplant. In 2007 she received her 1st kidney transplant from her wonderful and loving mother, and over the years (especially recently) her kidneys have been rapidly failing and she needs to have another kidney replacement much sooner than expected. She has had such amazing courage and fortitude dealing with the day-to-day hardships and sufferings of kidney failure and diabetic issues for the last decade, while still always remaining positive and focused on joy and love. She enkindles so much hope as a sister, daughter, friend, and therapist, and we are humbly asking for assistance in helping her carry this cross during this time as she will be needing surgery as soon as possible. A kidney replacement is an extremely overwhelming process physically, emotionally, and mentally, but also financially (even with insurance), so any and all help is greatly appreciated, especially since Helen is self-employed with her own business. This support will help cover medical bills, surgery, pre/post-surgery care, loss of work, rehabilitation, medications, medical equipment, etc.

While a kidney donor has not been 100% confirmed, we are working to find a match and will update as soon as that happens. For now, please pray and consider helping and share this page with friends and family!

Please feel free to leave comments of love and support on this page and to share it via social media. Prayers are greatly appreciated, especially for the intercession of St Padre Pio, Elizabeth the Trinity, and St Faustina (three of her favorites) who have been instrumental in interceding and protecting her throughout this. Also, St Marina of Antioch, who is the protectress of nephrology (kidney issues).

If you have any questions, or would like to show support in other ways, please contact: augustine.t.welsh@gmail.com.

Thank you so much for helping during this difficult time. May God watch over and keep her, protect her, and guide her through this.

Update #12

Happy Birthday Helen and more good news!!!

Today is Helen's Birthday! Thank you all for the prayers. She is really so strong. The last couple months, and especially the last few weeks have been extremely stressful mentally, physically, and emotionally for her. Yesterday she was having trouble even walking up the stairs without getting out of breath. Yet she is still happy and positive, and offering it all up joyfully.

Big news too is her brother Dominic turned out to be a perfect match! The transplant team will present the case to the surgeons and the doctors this Wednesday and once finalized they can schedule a surgery, as soon as possible! We are looking at somewhere most likely between May 30th - June 12th. As for right now Helen will be taking off work until after her recovery, as it has become incredibly hard to have any energy anymore. Right now we are getting her to rest as much as possible and not go stir crazy from not being able to do much.
Please also pray for her lovely and wonderful mother Elizabeth how tested positive for covid after taking care of Helen when she had covid last week. It has been a very rough week of recovery for both of them, and prayers and love are great appreciated.

Will update more soon. Again thanks everyone for the prayers.

Update #11

Update 5/19/2022:

Thank you all for the prayers and love. Was another really tough few days for Helen but she is pulling through and is a trooper.

Helen was discharged a few hours ago and is sleeping now. It takes a ton of energy out of her to do anything. Luckily, her hemoglobin was raised to 6.5. The Epoetin injection as well as another iron infusion helped her a lot. They had to keep her in a covid wing because she is still testing positive for covid. Although she is very weak from a good amount of blood loss and anemia she is in good spirits. For now she has been able to avoid getting a blood transfusion which is good because if she had to get one it could have significantly delayed her transplant.

She has had to take this whole week off of work due to the current blood issues as well as all of last week due to covid. Being self employed its been a hard decision for her to do because she is so invested in her patients as a therapist and it could be several weeks before she is able to see them again. Everyone has been so supportive and loving, so she is very grateful.

We are trying to get back to everyone who has reached out. Thank you all so much. She does send her love and thoughts back - just been a busy few days talking with each doctor.

Update #10

Update:
Helen had to go to the ER today. She was losing a lot of blood (part of renal failure where your blood does not clot as it should). For tonight she is staying right below the ICU but is in good hands. She seemed to recover well from Covid last week, but it still took an immense toll on her organs.
The doctors performed what is called a DDAVP, which is a treatment to help blood platelets to clot better. For now we are hoping to have her hemoglobin above 5.5 in the morning, otherwise they might have to do a transfusion. Please pray this isn't the case as a transfusion could very much complicate her transplant. The hospital completed another iron infusion which should help stop the blood.
She is in good spirits, despite the prospect of dialysis in the morning. We are still waiting for the approval for this, as her kidney doctor is worried about possible infection and complications with her blood pressure prior to the transplant. She is resting well at the hospital for the night, and we are very grateful for the prayers and love from everyone for her.
Will post an update in the morning. Thank you all.

Update #9

Update: Covid
Thank you all for the continued prayers. Lately some days have been good for Helen, some days bad. She had a little more energy this last weekend than she usually does, as we are still waiting/working with the transplant team and the hospitals for finalization.
Helen tested positive for covid yesterday. She had been feeling very ill starting Monday, more under the weather than usual and has been in bed the last 2 days. We spoke with her kidney doctor and did a covid test and it came back positive. Temps been fluctuating around/above 100 for the last 24 - 48 hours with lots and lots of body aches, but her breathing is good right now. Her nephrologist has her on a covid medicine called paxlovid and they are going to start her on monoclonal antibody therapy tomorrow at the hospital. One of the main concerns is watching the covid medicine along with her diabetic & kidney medications. Combined they can have an bad effect on her blood pressure so the nephrologist and infectious disease doctors decided together to scale back on a few of her regular medications while she is taking the covid medicine to be safe. Right now we are just trying to get her to rest as much as possible and keep her spirits up and keep a close eye on her symptoms. She does have the vaccine, and her doctors are navigating this extremely closely and expertly, and her wonderful and loving mother is here keeping an eye on her (very wonderful to have an ER nurse so close as a mom and her sister (soon to be a Ph.D. of Nursing) is providing telehealth expertise as well from Denver. So she has the best medical experts from all angles!)
Will update later. Thank you all for the continued prayers.

Update #8

Been a super busy last few weeks, and wanted to provide an update on Helen.

She has been hanging in there best she can last few weeks and most days are very difficult for her (especially energy-wise). Even with many hours of sleep its hard for her to move around.

Last week she had a scare, as she kept getting blurriness in her eyes. Thinking it was related to her diabetes she saw a doctor and it was indeed related. She has retinopathy - where the blood vessels start to leak in her eyes. She will be having a operation to help with this in a few weeks: an injection to help it drain. Retinopathy leads to glaucoma and retinal detachment so prayers appreciated.

We are still waiting for a final ok from more test results on her donors for her kidneys. Right now her brother looks the most promising. Multiple tests are needed to ensure all toxins, cholesterol, and other aspects are good in the donor. We are hoping to hear from the transplant team this week or next.

Thank you all for the continued prayers. There will be more frequent updates in the next few days and weeks. Its just been a very trying and busy last couple of weeks.

Update #7

Just wanted to update on Helen:

Firstly, thank you to everyone for your prayers and support. It means so much during this time and please know that Helen is keeping everyone in her prayers as well.

We are still waiting to finalize a match with a donor. Hoping to hear something very soon after a few more labs and blood work. There will be an update as soon as a match is finalized.

There has been a visible change in Helen over the last week due to her renal failure. Her energy is extremely low, having trouble walking up and down the stairs or getting up from sitting and is physically drained. The best thing right now is for her to rest and get the nutrients she needs and wait and pray that a match is finalized as soon as possible so surgery can happen quickly.

Please continue to prayer. From our hearts to yours, thank you again.

Update #6

None of us like feeling like a charity case. It's safe to say that many of us would rather take the impossible route, than ever ask or accept monetarily from anyone, yet, when someone we know is in need, we always help.

Helen had a beautiful thought the other day in light of feeling overwhelmed by everyone's generosity and support. She said, "even Christ accepted help. He didn't have to, but he did. And we are to imitate him in all we do humbly and lovingly." He asked and accepted the help of the apostles, of Simon to help carry his cross, even of his blessed mother. Christ taught us that we cannot do this life alone, and so we help each other.

Helen is a therapist. Doctors, therapists, priests, have much in common: their life is dedicated to helping those in need, those who are broken, sick, lost. Every day their work is dedicated to helping the needed. They see the goodness and health that could be and help people achieve and see it too. Helen could have worked for a giant corporation, but she decided to open her own clinic so that she could incorporate the strengths and good things in all she did when helping someone through trauma or day to day difficulties. We need good doctors, priests, and therapists.

Helen is praying for everyone and sends her love, gratitude, and thanksgiving. Even though she has to constantly monitor everything she eats, or monitor her blood sugar and vitals, she is remaining positive and keeping her eyes of Christ despite having incredibly low energy every day and offering it all up for others.

Some people have asked if they can donate via venmo - we have set up an account connected to this account @helenskidneyfundraiser.

Still working on finalizing a donor. When that is completed, we will send an update. Thank you all again, from Helen and her family from the bottoms of our hearts during this lent and always.

Update #5

Transplants require a ton of doctor visits, labs, and consultations. Last month Helen woke up fine, but by noon had an intensely sharp pain in her abdomen. After rushing her to the ER, (a dose of morphine didn't help but eventually a dose of dilaudid did) she spent the next few days in the hospital meeting with her nephrologist. Her amazing mother Elizabeth (who is an amazing nurse too!) as well as many friends, The Tower of Shadows by Drew Bowling, flowers, where all there to lift her spirits and encourage her. For now, dialysis was avoided but her nephrologist said there is still a chance she might have to pre surgery. Despite the stress, Helen still remains joyful and upbeat, showing how faith, hope, and love can get us through even the toughest times.
