About the Harkins Society

Dr. Henry Harkins, the Department of Surgery’s first chairman, established the Henry Harkins Surgical Society in 1955. Membership is by invitation only and is extended to all graduating residents and fellows of the department of surgery as well as active faculty members. The goals of the society are to establish and maintain a sense of unity among the members, provide a means to disseminate the surgical and personal accomplishments of the individual members, and support the UW surgical residents in their surgical training.

Message from the President, Ted Kohler, to our Donors

As the Society's new President, I would like to thank you for donating to the Harkins Society.  The Board has decided to modify our mission primarily to support the Residents. As you probably know, The Department has been unable to supply many of the financial needs of the Residents.  As Alumni and Faculty, past and present, of the UW Department of Surgery, it is up to us to support the Residents as they negotiate our very challenging training program.  After surveying the Residents' needs, we chose to give their first most common request our first priority: to provide a pair of loupes to every categorical resident by the time they reach their R3 year.  Donations in excess of that amount will be used to fund other special projects for the residents, such as emergency travel funds, textbooks, and improvements to resident work and study spaces. We all know how difficult the residency is and how hard our residents work - it will be a great morale booster for them to know that their fellow alumni are there to help them through. Thank you for helping us meet out goal of $30,000, which should allow us to supply the loupes and more. We hope you will not only invest your money, but your time and wisdom as our Society develops a strong supporting role for our young followers!

Your donation is essential to the mission of the Harkins Society - the support of the residents at the University of Washington.  Here are some examples of the ways your donation can be put to use:

  • Loupes: The Harkins Society funds a pair of loupes for every categorical and plastic surgery resident at the University of Washington.
  • Resident spaces: Work and on-call spaces for the residents need improvement. Your donation will support creating new, efficient, comfortable spaces for the residents to work.
  • Textbooks: The Harkins Society provides essential surgical texts and other learning tools to the residents.
  • Morale boosters and networking: Your donation helps fund alumni networking events with the residents, and provides support for resident outings and extracurricular events.
  • Emergency funds: Residents with family emergencies or unexpected travel needs can apply to the Harkins Society for support.
  • Travel and presentations: Harkins Society donations support resident travel to regional and national meetings.
  • Resident Expenses: The Harkins Society strives to reduce the burden of under-funded mandates for the residents - expenses such as parking, license fees, and meals.
