We are raising funds for our upcoming trip to NYC for the Charles Mingus Festival and Competition. Our Jazz combo has been selected to participate, and we need to raise about $7000 to help cover travel, hotel and meals.
Our Green Country Youth Jazz Combo, which operates out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been accepted to participate in the Charles Mingus Let My Children Hear Music Festival and Competition which is in New York City. This combo is made up of three Seniors from Booker T. Washington High School, (George Markert on Bass, Sam Parker on Piano, and Cole Woodward on Drum Set) and one senior from Reagent Christian Academy (Noah Roberts on Guitar).
Our combo is very excited and honored to be accepted to this prestigious competition. Now our goal is to raise the money to help fund this very fast approaching trip.
"Why start raising funds this late?" you may ask. Well, we submitted our entry on December 10th, and we were just notified of our acceptance on January 5th, (which is Charles Mingus' birthday). So we have a short amount of time to raise a large chunk of funds.
This is where you come in. We need to raise about $7000 to help pay for this trip. Our flight tickets will be around $350-$450 a round-trip ticket, depending on how soon we can purchase them. Our hotel will cost about $2400 to $3000, depending on where in the city we plan to stay. Meal costs will be anywhere from $100 to $150 a day for the whole group. We plan to use the subway and shuttles while we are there, which will run us around $300-$400. We also plan to visit several of the cities iconic jazz venues, so that our students may experience the real New York Jazz scene.
The Green Country Youth Jazz Ensemble is an after school, High School level Jazz program, that is made up of students from the greater Green Country Oklahoma area. These students meet once a week to rehearse and prepare advanced levels of Jazz music for the purpose of education, competition, and performance.
For the past eight years, this organization has put in an entry to the Charles Mingus Let My Children Hear Music Festival. As a Big Band, this group has been accepted a total of five times, and our combo has been accepted a total of three times.
