Update #10

Hello,

To everyone who has donated into my campaign for graduate school thank you so much... I have used the acquired money towards my school's tuition fee deposit... the money has been put to good use so I want to thank you all for the help.

Because of the situation with corona, I might not be able to attend graduate school in Spain and might have to defer and wait until next year or the following... I am not sure what the situation will be but I will be making a decision on June 15th. By then I will be able to know about the situation about the student visa application and if the Spanish consulate in Tokyo can help out or not..

It is a wait and see kind of situation.

But I want to remind all of you that this dream wouldn't have been possible without all your support,

I will be announcing my decision in June.

Thank you!

Take care!

Astrid

More Info

Hello!

My name is Astrid. I have been a teacher for over eight years now. My passion and love of education has made me who I am today.

Over the last couple years, I have been trying to push myself to become a better educator for my students and that is when I realized, I must pursue getting a masters degree.

I have felt stagnant in my current teaching methods and need new ideas to improve my techniques in the classroom.

Teaching English abroad is a phase for many people, sometimes even a gap year! But for me that is not it. I studied a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics at San Diego State University as well as hold a TESOL certificate from there.

Over the years teaching in South Korea and Japan, I have seen myself grow as a person and love what I do. Teaching will always be my joy and that is what I want to keep sharing with the world.

Now down to the good stuff...

I have been offered an opportunity to study for my masters degree in Spain!

Unfortunately I cannot afford it all the costs of tuition... but I have been trying to save up for my education... so far it has been very challenging and I am struggling.

I hope that with the community we build and help from family and friends, I can afford to go to back to school.

It is my dream to finish my masters and work as a teacher in an international school or university.

Any little bit helps

Thank you!

God bless!

Update #10

Thanks to my dear friends Michael Buckalew and Isela Chavarin /Valenzuela for donating to my graduate school fund!

Michael is a friend whom I met in South Korea teaching English. We have still kept in touch till this day! It has been almost 7 years since we were living in Ilsan!

As for Isela...what can I say? You are my childhood best friend! We both grew up in the same small town in California. Through thick and thin we have been there for each other! It has been over almost 20 years of friendship! I love you!

Thanks to both of you and all my friends who have donated to my campaign, I was able to use the funds to pay for my graduate school deposit fee!

Due to this corona virus situation it is a bit complicated if I will be able to attend school by September or not. Hopefully it is possible! I hope I can attend by October at the latest. My time in Japan Has been coming to an end I can feel. Of course I will be coming back to Japan in the future. ❤️

Update #9

Hello Everyone! I would like to start off with an update!
Recently my good friend Abdellatif has donated into my campaign! I met him while we were both living in Okayama now he is doing well in Canada and I am happy for him!

So far I have been working online to make extra cash for my masters and moving to Spain as the corona virus has made schools close. Sadly as this virus has made a lot of school close for a long period many educators have to find other ways to make money or keep busy. For me I used this opportunity to work harder and try my best to make more income for graduate school...

If you can donate into my fundraiser I would really appreciate it!

Any little bit helps!

Update #7

Hello Everyone!

Today's update I want to start off by thanking my wonderful friend Kristina! I met her in South Korea and we were both English teachers in Ilsan!

I just can't believe how many people I keep in touch with still from my time in Korea! So I decided to write an update on my time in Korea as a teacher.
I was living and teaching in South Korea for about 1 year and a half. After graduating from San Diego State, I was having a difficult time looking for a teaching job that paid well and was full time...then I was offered an opportunity to teach abroad. With the help of my friends including my friend, Michael. I was offered a teaching position in Ilsan, South Korea which was about 40 minutes away from Seoul, the capital.

I had an amazing time there although my time was cut short due to the fact I was offered a teaching position in Japan...but I had amazing students and friendships that I do believe will last a lifetime.

On my next update I might write about teaching abroad and how it has impacted me. Maybe the differences between teaching in the US, Japan and Korea...who knows!

Thank you to all my friends so far who have donated to my campaign for graduate school.

It means a lot!

Update #5

Update!

Today one of my dear friends donated into my fundraiser. I want to say thank you to her! She was a teacher and friend of mine who was living in Korea at the same time as me. We became close friends. I want to say thank you!

For today's update I would like to discuss knowledge. What is knowledge? Some say knowledge is power. To me knowledge is curiosity. To be curious is to open your mind to new ideas and concepts.

I hope that with entering the masters program I can enrich the curiosity of my students and motivate them.

Update #4

Why did I choose to become a teacher? I am a person who has always cared about others. I have always been in touch with my emotions. Growing up I was bullied a lot and no one seemed to help me. I didn't have many friends who stood up to my bullies or even teachers who did something about it although they knew how badly I was treated. I decided to become an educator because I truly believe that I can be a good influence to others. I want to share my emotional strength and show my students that you too can overcome your obstacles. Whether it is learning a new language or overcoming something even more difficult. I will always cherish the memories of teaching my kids. I truly love each and every one of them.

Update #3

When choosing my degree and the age range of my students, I decided that elementary school children were the best age group for me. I have had the opportunity to teach students of all ages, but for me the best age group to teach is elementary. My students have filled me with joy and sense of purpose in life. Their curiosity towards learning and questioning all there is to their surroundings have made me realize life is full of wonders and mysterious that we should open ourselves to discover.

I hope that with the donations I receive on this fundraiser I can put it towards bringing joy to my students through education.

Thank you.

Update #2

Hello! An update on my fundraiser. So far I had a 50 dollar donation from a dear friend... Thank you so much ☺️

Today, I would like to talk about why I decided to become a teacher. Many people don't know this, but I started my first teaching position when I was only 20 years old! I was an assistant language teacher at my university in San Diego!

During that time I met many students from around the world. Many of my students were from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Spain, Saudi Arabia and other countries.

After completing a year in that assistant position, I realized I would like to continue my career in English education and teaching English a second or foreign language.

I still keep in touch with many of my former students.

WIth this campaign, I hope to share my passion for teaching and why I am pursing a masters degree in International Education. I want to continue to grow as an educator and enrich the lives of my students.
