This is a practicum that I am completing in conjunction with Boston University's OT Doctoral Program, OT 911 Course  Entitled: Practicum In Social Policy and Disability.

I will be traveling to Mexico in August with my family on vacation.  I will take time out of my vacation to spend time with children and families living at "The Dump" in Puerto Vallarta Mexico.  Being a doctoral student at Boston University I have developed my understanding of social policy and injustices in the world.  I decided to take my skills and professional background to children that do not have access to the service of Occupational Therapy.

Globalization and ease of travel results in increased numbers of occupational therapy practitioners and students working in many countries. However, the majority of these individuals have developed their professional knowledge based on models of practice rooted in Western and medical ideologies (Iwama, 2004).

“Theories of disability and occupation are generally developed within Western societies or ‘minority world settings’, while the remaining 83% of the world's population, that is the ‘majority world’ live in environments where beliefs and constructs, and connection with occupation and the practice of daily life may be significantly different“ (Shamrock, 2017, p. 490).

This project is an effort to improve the lives of the citizens (adults and children) living in poverty in Mexico.  The small outreach is an effort to educate children and adults in developmental interventions.  Programs in the United States provide intervention to children such as Laws, Early Intervention, and Special Education.

I will be developing 3 different intervention kits for 3 different age groups (infants, preschool school- age) children and families that live at "The Dump" in Puerta Vallarta Mexico.

In 2006, "The Mission" discovered that whole families were living and working in the city dump overlooking the resort city of Puerto Vallarta, in Mexico.  They knew of no other way of life as some families had been living there for many generations.  Their children were not registered and were not able to obtain birth certificates as they had no official address, so the children could not go to school.  Their futures were bleak.  a mission statement was developed together with the developer of Paradise Village and input from many visitors and tourists in Puerto Vallarta.

In the mission statement, it stated: "to provide physical, educational, medical, spiritual and emotional support to the families living in the landfill or garbage dump in Puerto Vallarta or surrounding areas."  Today the mission provides schooling, daycare, medical support housing for the families.

This project is an effort to improve the lives of the citizens (adults and children) living in poverty in Mexico.  The small outreach is an effort to educate children and adults in developmental interventions.

Please consider donating to my global efforts to provide intervention.  Your money will help offset some of the costs associated with purchasing materials, assembling kits and transporting the kits to Mexico.  Any extra funds will be used to purchase supplies for the Mission.

Please view the website: http://www.familiasdelaesperanza.org/ to gain further information about The Dump.
