Hey community! Thank you for continuing to support and invest in my mission and business! I have updated the description of this fundraiser to add that your funds not only go to helping Black families receive doula services at lower costs, but also to fund my trip to Africa for a Black birth workers retreat!! I get to venture to the land of where my ancestors were stolen for the first time and learn from African Midwives from the country Benin! Please share and help me reach that goal!

More Info

I am an activist, a freedom fighter, and a black birth worker. I started Give Light in July of 2020 in response to so many horrific stories of being pregnant during the pandemic. I am a Certified Lactation Educator and Counselor (CLEC) and a trained childbirth educator.  I am also a Certified Full Spectrum Doula through the Birthing Advocacy Doula Trainings (BADT). This training allows me to apply the doula model of care throughout any pregnancy outcome, including LGBTQIA+ affirming services, miscarriage, abortion, stillbirth, surrogacy or adoption.

A doula is a trained non-medical professional that provides physical, emotional, and informational support to a family before, during and shortly after birth to ensure that they have a positive and safe birth experience.

I started my doula and reproductive justice advocacy business called “Give Light Doula & Advocacy Services” in honor of the great Black feminist and activist Ella Baker.  Ella said, “Give light, and the people will find the way.” I feel deeply that a doula is that light!

My vision is simple and clear:  To offer high quality trauma informed doula care services, lactation education/counseling and reproductive justice advocacy to all families regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, gender, or orientation.  While my work has always led me to advocate for the most marginalized, my services will be available to all families who will have me be part of their birth experience!

I am excited to begin this journey, however, I know that this work will take time, love and nourishment to get it off the ground. Your donations will go towards covering the cost of my services for Black birthing people who need support. Your contributions will also go towards helping me fund my trip to Africa (specifically Benin) in 2022 on a Black birth workers retreat! This will be my first time ever visiting the land where my ancestors were stolen from and learn traditional birth work through African Midwives! And finally, donating will provide you the opportunity to invest in Black lives by supporting a Black Womxn owned business in San Diego. If you’ve followed my work, if you trust my leadership, if you believe in my vision please donate so that I can build this amazing dream!

Thank you,

Nyisha
