RePlay for Kids adapts and modifies toys for kids with disabilities. We need a van to allow us transport our workshops supplies to events in Ohio. This will allow us to reach more volunteers so we can help more kids.
At RePlay for Kids, our mission is to increase the availability of toys and assistive devices for children with disabilities.
Young children learn through play and social interaction. These activities teach them to relate to other people and to interact with and control their environment. Children with disabilities are no exception. For many children with disabilities, playing with toys is a critical step in learning alternative communication skills. Toys help these children develop play skills and teach them cause and effect relationships. Limitations in strength and coordination in children with disabilities often prevent them from using mainstream toys. Adapted toys encourage a child to make a certain motion as part of his/her physical therapy treatment.
RePlay for Kids' hosts workshops in which volunteers adapt toys so that a child with a disability can use a switch to play with the toy. Volunteers open up a toy, find the switch, and solder wires to the toy for the external switch. The volunteers learn about electronics and the needs of kids with disabilities, while doing a fun group activity.
We have many ways we reach kids to give them adapted toys.
RePlay@Home-toys for kids for at home therapy
Annual Adapted Toy Giveaway-families and clinicians pick out toys at the end of the year( 2016 we gave away over 1,500 adapted toys)
Family Workshops- we teach families how to adapt toys for their child
RePlay Ride-On- providing children with special needs a battery powered car with an adapted switch. It gets kids moving and exploring their environment
A van would allow us to carry all the equipment needed to each workshop. Currently we are using our personal minivans to get the workshops supplies and toys to workshops to be adapted or delivering the adapted toys to agencies. The demand for our services keeps growing and a van would allow us to fill more requests.
