Exercise is crucial in the development not only of the child's mind but also of interpersonal communication skills they learn. These basic needs are fulfilled when a child gets to play with other kids in the park. There is a defined link between healthy living and productivity. This is significantly more true for children! Healthy exercise is an essential element for proper development of a child and a playground is still a place where children play and learn the basic life skills necessary to be a productive adult. Our children lacks the basic community amenity which not only promotes proper child development, but also engages parents with each other increasing community bonding. Gary Community Partnership recognizes this need and has taken action to move the community in the right direction. There was a damaged and unusable playground that sat dormant for many years. We saw this as a teaching opportunity in the community and worked with residents, after getting proper authorization, to dismantle and repurpose the wood for park benches utilized all around the park including the playground, basketball court, and walking areas. We are starting Phase II to install a playground. A $5 investment in a child will move us towards our goal. Children, regardless of the socioeconomic status they were born into, should have the opportunity to be a kid and play. Childhood obesity is a real problem in many low income areas. We want to change this narrative and with you help we can!
