What is FTC?

FTC is an acronym for the First Tech Challenge, a team-based competition for grades 7-12, where teams are challenged to build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. More information can be found on the official FTC website: https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/ftc.

The First Tech Challenge has given us newfound opportunities in learning STEM principles and building leadership for future entrepreneurship.

Team Introduction

Dry Ice Robotics was founded in when a group of kids interested in either robotics and programming—or both—came together to learn and explore the skills and experience of being a team.

Although we hail from a wide range of schools and age groups and have different interests outside of robotics, we were able to come together as friends because of our shared interest in exploring robotics. We all recognize that with the advent of new technology, many of the skills we learn from robotics will help us contribute to the scientific and engineering world in the future. The First Tech Challenge program is perfect for our team and our goals because it allows us to acquire new skills in engineering, computer science, and physics, learning how to progressively and positively interact with others while still competing as opponents, and to improve our leadership and communication skills.

When we decided to become an FTC team, we wanted to remind ourselves of our engineering principles by reflecting them in our team name. Hence, we choose the name “Dry Ice,” which “Don’t Repeat Yourself" and “Innovative and Creative Engineering”. “Don’t repeat yourself" is actually a software engineering principle in the book The Pragmatic Programmer by Andy Hunt and Dave Thomas. It is based on the logic, predominantly used in computer science, will hence no longer affect other elements. Besides using DRY as an effective coding methodology, our team interprets the DRY principle to withhold its value in other areas, like design and communication, as a way of adapting and learning from our mistakes in the past.

We have built a legacy around our robust designs, and have accomplished what many have not been able to do in the current season. We have successfully completed 4 whole robot iterations, and are moving the World Championships with a fiery passion (although ironically our name is Dry Ice). Just like our robot, we have progressively built upon previous experiences to better ourselves as a team.

Why do we need your support

Any amount of your support will provide us with the financial means to purchase parts and materials of good quality, to implement more creative designs with less monetary concerns, provide us the tools and necessities to fuel our competitive spirit, and most importantly, to prevent malfunctioning during competition with spare parts ready and timely replacement. Your support will also help us cover a part of our travel and accommodation fees, shipping fees (robots and other materials), and registration fees for our upcoming competition in Houston, Texas. We are currently ranked 103rd out of 9439 qualifying teams, but we want to rank within top 20 through worlds. We have never been moved this far into the competition, and the whole team is really excited about this great opportunity!

On behalf of FTC robotic team 9784 DRY ICE, we would like to thank you in advance for your generous contribution to the success of our team this season.
